Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Opening Outburst Puts Knights Down Early, Fall to Lake Superior State 6-2

Potsdam, NY – Four goals in the first period by the opposition put the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team in an early hole from which it could not recover, as the Golden Knights suffered a 6-2 defeat against Lake Superior State Saturday night at Cheel Arena.

The Green and Gold dropped to 3-5 on the campaign and Lake Superior State improved to 3-4-1. Clarkson opens up ECAC Hockey play on the road next weekend, taking on Union College on Friday night and then Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

The lights were busy for goals in the first period, but unfortunately for the Knights, it was Lake Superior State that was finding success on the offensive end. The Lakers got on the board just 33 seconds in when Hunter Ramos skated in on the right side and sent a pass in front, only to see his intended pass bounce off a few players and find the back of the net to make it 1-0.

Clarkson responded with a goal on the power play about four minutes later. Tristan Sarsland took a shot from the slot that was denied by the Lakers' goalkeeper, but Talon Sigurdson was able to knock the puck out of the air on the rebound, batting it in at 4:25. Barely a minute later, the Lakers got the goal back, also on the power play, as William Ahlrik tapped in a hard pass at the far post on a backdoor pass from Connor Milburn at 5:33.

Lake Superior State was far from done, scoring at 12:12 and then again at 17:28 for its 4-1 lead. The third goal came off a 2-on-2 when a drop pass from Ahlrik went to Hunter Ramos at the right circle. Ramos's shot was stopped, but the rebound was slapped in by Samuel Belanger. Another quick transition came on a 2-on-1 by the Lakers. The first shot came off the stick of John Herrington and was denied by Shane Soderwall with the glove, though Carter Batchelder knocked in the rebound with a stick swat for the three-goal lead.

The Knights had a key opportunity at the start of the second period when two penalties were whistled on the Lakers, creating a 5-on-3. Clarkson tallied while up two players when Tate Taylor one-timed a shot from the left circle, with assists going to Owen Van Steensel and Jared Mangan. Unfortunately for the Knights, they could not convert again on the power play and their next opportunity which came shortly at the end of the other penalty. Lake Superior State weathered that storm and eventually regained its three-goal lead late in the period. Ryan Beck won the race to the puck at the Clarkson end line and quickly turned to see what was available to him with his teammates crashing the net. He found Carter Batchelder on the doorstep, as he tapped one in over the pad Keenan Rancier at 16:29.

Clarkson tried to get back into the game while at even-strength, but was unable to do so, forcing the team to pull the goalie near the midway point of the third stanza. The Knights were buzzing offensively for a bit, only to see Calem Mangone gain possession along the right side boards in the neutral zone and take a few strides over the blue line for an easy goal at 11:08.

The Knights narrowly won the battle of shots on goal (32-31) and on total shots (63-55) and went 2-for-4 on the power play against the Lakers' 1-for-4 effort with the skater advantage. Keenan Rancier made 21 saves in relief of Shane Soderwall (4 saves), including one on a breakaway midway through the second period. Rorke Applebee stopped 30 shots for the Lakers.
