Clarkson Settles for 1-1 Tie Against #14 Middlebury

Potsdam, NY – Plenty of chances presented themselves for both teams, but the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team and Middlebury College had to settle for trading goals in the final six-plus minutes as the two teams ended in a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights, receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches' poll, moved to 5-0-2 on the season, while the Panthers, ranked 14th in the country in that same poll, went to 2-1-2 on the year. Clarkson opens Liberty League play on Wednesday when the team hosts Skidmore College.

Although neither team scored in the first half, it looked like it would be an offensive-minded game from the start, as each team had a shot within the first five minutes of the contest. Although the half ended in a 5-5 tie in shots, Middlebury had the better scoring chances, though those didn't show up on the stat sheet as Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio shut those opportunities down by frequently intercepting crosses from the corners before the Panthers could get a true shot.

At the start of the second half, each team had a solid scoring chance. Maddie Lopol's first shot was blocked in the 51st minute and the rebound was denied by Livia Davidson. Middlebury quickly countered with a pair of shots on goal in the next 75 seconds, but the two teams remained scoreless.

DiCaprio was called upon for a couple of saves inside the penalty area, with one getting blocked away from only a few yards away.

Clarkson would score late in the second half, appearing to have the game-winner with only a little over six minutes remaining. Julia Tylar started the play with a long free kick from just over the center line in her own defensive end, finding Emma Robinson. The freshman was able to curl around a pair of Middlebury defenders and take a shot with her left foot, forcing Livia Davidson to dive for a save. However, she didn't catch it clean, and Callie Abel was able to tap in the rebounds to put the Knights up 1-0.

Middlebury nearly tied the game a few minutes later as the Panthers continued to pour on the pressure. DiCaprio made a denial in front and the rebound sailed over the crossbar. That would not be the end of the chances for Middlebury, though, as a settled pass from about 35 yards out by Roshann Purcell was collected by Gigi Day. Before the Clarkson defense could get in front of Day, she volleyed the ball in with a shot near her waist to the left post to tie the game late in the 89th minute.

Middlebury finished with a 16-9 edge in shots (9-6 shots on goal), with that margin being created by an 11-4 lead in the second half. Clarkson had three corner kick chances to the Panthers' two. DiCaprio made eight saves in the game, while Davidson stopped five shots.
