22nd-Ranked Clarkson Remains Unbeaten With 2-0 Win Over Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – Two goals in the opening 30 minutes proved to be enough as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team opened up Liberty League play with a 2-0 victory over Skidmore College on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights, ranked 22nd in the country in the latest United Soccer Coaches' poll, remained unbeaten at 6-0-2, while Skidmore dropped its first game of the season, falling to 4-1-2. Clarkson is back at Hantz Field on Saturday when the Knights host RIT.

It didn't take much time for the Green and Gold to get on the scoreboard. Skidmore was in its defensive end for a stretch of several minutes before finally escaping, but Clarkson returned to the far end and was awarded a corner kick. Though that corner was deflected out of bounds to the opposite side, the Knights quickly regrouped on the throw in by Maddie Lopol. The toss was short to Lillian Gillett, who quickly played the ball out to Emily Davis on the wing. Davis then tapped a pass to Chloe Hodge near the top of the box. She touched the ball twice before turning and hitting a shot into the opposite corner at 9:04 for a 1-0 lead. The score was Hodge's third goal of the year.

Clarkson picked up another goal roughly 20 minutes later. Just inside the Skidmore defensive zone, Julia Tylar decided to play a free kick to the opposite wing instead of going into the middle of the field. With lots of time, the next pass made its way into the box, where Lopol sent a short lofted pass out to Emily Davis. The junior midfielder settled the ball off her chest and took a touch on the ground before hitting a hard shot with her right foot to the top corner from about 25 yards out for a 2-0 Clarkson advantage, Davis's first goal of the season.

A handful of other scoring chances occurred for both teams for the remainder of the game, but the best chances generally were in the first half. Molly DiCaprio finished with eight saves, though most of Skidmore's shots on goal were from far out and didn't put too much pressure on the junior goalkeeper for the Knights. Claire Wolgast finished with four saves for Skidmore.

Overall, Clarkson outshot the Thoroughbreds 13-11, and the Knights had four corner kick chances to Skidmore's two.
