Hodge Scores One, Assists on Another as Knights Down RPI 2-0

Troy, NY - With three important conference games remaining to clinch a playoff spot, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team started the stretch off on the right foot with a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights guaranteed themselves a winning record in 2023 with the win, improving to 9-4-2 overall and 3-4-0 in Liberty League games, while Rensselaer dropped to 7-4-3 and 2-4-1 in conference games. Clarkson has two remaining games, both on the road, as the team travels to close rival St. Lawrence University on Tuesday and finishes off the regular-season next Saturday at Union College.

The best scoring chance of the day for RPI came midway through the first half when Clarkson was whistled for a push in the back in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. However, for the second time this season, junior goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio was up to the task, reading Gwen Barnes' kick early and easily stopping the shot without allowing a rebound in the 20th minute.

Just as she did on Tuesday in a 6-0 win over SUNY Potsdam, junior Chloe Hodge scored what proved to be the game-winner late in the first half, and from virtually the same spot. Unlike her penalty kick goal on Tuesday, Hodge scored from about 10 yards out in the center of the box in the 43rd minute. Julia Tylar took a corner kick from the right side, and her cross was punched out by Megan Wampner, but Hodge was unmarked and quickly settled the ball, tapping a shot with her right foot through traffic to put Clarkson up 1-0 at 42:37.

Clarkson recorded an insurance goal late in the second half with a very quick transition. With just under three minutes remaining, Molly DiCaprio took a goal kick and sent the ball towards midfield. Hodge chipped the ball forward to Brooke Everest, creating a footrace between her and the RPI defense. Wampner tried to close the angle down against Everest, but Everest's shot went off the crossbar. With the goalie out of the play, a battle for the loose ball began. Everest, on the ground, tapped the ball to the square about five yards away near the penalty line towards Hodge, who then kicked it back towards Emma Robinson. With Robinson even with the goalie, the ball snuck just inside the left post past an RPI defender on the goal line, giving the Knights a 2-0 lead at 87:46.

Clarkson finished with a 15-8 edge in shots and an 8-3 lead in shots on goal. Clarkson also had the advantage in corners (4-3). Molly DiCaprio stopped three shots for her 15th career shutout, one short of the program record. Megan Wampner made six saves for RPI.
