Knights Record Third Straight Shutout in 2-0 Win Over SLU

Canton, NY - Second half goals from Arin Bates and Emma Robinson helped push the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team past St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, as the Golden Knights gained a 2-0 victory over the Saints in Liberty League play at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Golden Knights gained their third consecutive shutout to improve to 10-4-2 overall and 4-4-0 in the Liberty League, while the Saints fell to 7-5-4 and 3-3-2. Clarkson leapfrogged St. Lawrence in the conference standings and now resides in fourth place with one game remaining to play. Depending on the results of other league contests on Wednesday, the Knights may have clinched a playoff spot before their game against Union College on Saturday.

Junior goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio was strong in the opening minutes against the Saints, stopping a point-blank shot from the top of the six off a simple cross just eight minutes into the game. A minute later another shot from the top of the 18 was denied by DiCaprio to keep the game scoreless in the early going. Midway through the half Clarkson had its best chance of the first half off a long cross by Arin Bates, which almost resulted in an own goal when a Saints defender nearly headed the ball into the St. Lawrence goal while attempting to clear the pass. The Knights had a similar close call roughly 10 minutes later when a free kick from about 35 yards out saw DiCaprio get taken out while attempting to punch the ball away, but the attempt went wide.

Clarkson nearly got on the scoreboard about 12 minutes into the second half when Callie Abel's header went just wide, but the Knights wouldn't have to wait much longer to score. The play started when Julia Tylar won a tackle close to midfield in the Clarkson defensive end and started a counter attack with a pass to the outside right. The ball was carried up by Arin Bates, who then played a quick give-and-go with Chloe Hodge, sending Bates to the outside of the penalty area. Bates then lifted a long cross towards the back post, looking for the likes of Callie Abel, Brooke Everest, or Emma Robinson, but the ball kept on floating over the head of St. Lawrence goalkeeper Keely Snode, finding the twine at 63:45 to put the Knights up 1-0.

St. Lawrence nearly tied the game 10 minutes later when Madison King-Thurber popped a shot over DiCaprio's head from about 20 yards out with DiCaprio charging out to lessen the angle. The ball bounced and hit the right post before being cleared, and the ensuing corner kick resulted in another wide shot for St. Lawrence. Coming up empty in those attempts would haunt the Saints, as on the very next goal kick after the wide header from the Saints would result in a Clarkson goal. DiCaprio's long goal kick ended up in the midfield, kickstarting Clarkson's offense. A couple of passes allowed Lillian Gillett to get loose for a hard open look at the St. Lawrence frame, and she hit a well-paced ball that was initially denied by Snode. However, the Saints' goalkeeper couldn't handle the hot shot cleanly, and Emma Robinson was there for the rebound at 75:08.

Clarkson finished with a 19-11 edge in shots, including a 13-6 lead in the second half after an even first 45 minutes. Clarkson had the advantage in shots on goal (10-5) and corner kicks (8-2). DiCaprio made five saves for her seventh solo shutout of the season, setting a program mark for most clean sheets in one season while also tying the school mark for career shutouts (16). Snode made eight stops for the Saints.
