Strong Shooting from Perimeter Lifts Knights to 75-70 Win Over William Smith

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Cassidy Dumont and junior Mariah Benavides combined for nine 3-pointers to lead the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a 75-70 conference win over William Smith College Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-12 overall and picked up their second win in league play, while William Smith fell to 4-9 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League. Clarkson will face Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson came out hot and received scoring bursts from several players in the early going. Maddie Pratt hit three mid-range jumpers in the first few minutes to put the Knights up by seven, and Clarkson was able to increase its lead thanks to 3-pointers from Ruthie Nolan, Mariah Benavides, and Cassidy Dumont, pushing the Green and Gold's advantage to 25-9 with just 90 seconds remaining in the first quarter. However, the Herons scored the final four points of the period and then tacked on the first eight of the next period to pull within four at the 6:49 mark of the second quarter. The Herons eventually got within two on a layup-and-one from Brooke Jarvis at the 3:31 mark, but Dumont hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go to allow the Knights to head to the locker room with a five-point advantage.

Dumont had 11 points in the first half, while Olivia Parisi scored 15 on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor. The two teams were in stark contrast of one another, as the Herons pounded the ball inside for their points and the Knights scored nearly half of their points from beyond the 3-point arc.

At the start of the third quarter, William Smith chipped away at the margin and eventually tied the game at 47 when Parisi made a short shot, but the Knights regained the lead thanks to a fast break layup by Lauryn Withrow and then a 3-pointer from Mariah Benavides. Up by just four early in the fourth, the Knights scored eight straight early on in the final quarter, capped off by a Dumont 3-pointer at 7:52. The Knights' lead hovered around double figures for the next four minutes, but three straight jumpers from the Herons dropped the lead to just six. A 3-pointer in the final minute from Molly Walsh made it a one-possession game, but Dumont was able to get inside for a layup with just 10 seconds to go to clinch the win.

Dumont finished with 19 points, making five of her 10 3-point field goal attempts, while also adding five rebounds and three assists. Benavides scored 18, shooting 5-for-12 from the floor with four 3-pointers. Ruthie Nolan (11 points), Maddie Pratt (10 points) and Lauryn Withrow (10 points) also finished in double figures.

For William Smith, Olivia Parisi had a game-high 28 points, shooting 12-for-18 from the floor, and finished one rebound short of a double-double. Brooke Jarvis added 17 points and Lauren DeVaney scored 12.
