Knights Win Second Straight with Big Second Half

Potsdam, NY – First-year collegians Lauryn Withrow and Cassidy Dumont combined for 30 points coming off the bench to help lift the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a come-from-behind win over RIT 63-52 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-12 and 3-7 in the Liberty League while the Tigers fell to 7-7 and 4-5 in league contests. Clarkson continues its run of home games next weekend when it hosts Bard College and Vassar College.

Things didn't start out great for the Knights as RIT scored the first nine points of the contest in less than two minutes. Clarkson's offense didn't get going until Ruthie Nolan rattled home a 3-pointer at the 6:25 mark, but that did little to hold down the Tigers' offense. RIT continued its run and led by a score of 17-5 when Sydney Pearson converted in the lane at the 3:40 mark. The Knights did score the final seven points of the quarter to pull within five, but RIT started the second with a 6-0 run to push the margin back to double figures.

Near the midway point of the second quarter, Lauren Bell scored five straight points to tie the game, but RIT would not relinquish its hold in the first half, as Emma Waite hit a 3-pointer and put the Tigers up by three at the break.

The second half was a different story for both teams. Clarkson began the third quarter on a 10-0 run, capped off by a Mariah Benavides layup and free throw at 5:04. The Tigers finally broke the ice of the second half on the next possession, but only Emma Waite did much in the way of shooting, scoring six of RIT's seven points in the period.

In the fourth, the Tigers clawed back to within striking distance, dropping the deficit to just one when Emma Waite hit a 3-pointer with 1:48 to go, but Lauryn Withrow buried a 3-pointer on Clarkson's next possession to return the margin to two possessions. RIT's shots in the final 90 seconds would fall, as Clarkson pulled away late thanks to free throws.

Withrow finished with 16 points on 5-for-6 shooting from both the floor and the line, while also adding in eight rebounds and four assists. Dumont was 5-for-13 from the floor for 14 points while both Elaina Porter and Mariah Benavides had 11 points.

For RIT, Alyssa Juergens scored 19 points on 8-for-17 shooting while also chipping in 13 rebounds. Waite had 19 points and Sarah Henretta scored 10 points while also grabbing 12 boards and dishing out five assists.
