Golden Knights Fall to Saints, 54-36

Potsdam, NY – A strong start from the outside shooters of St. Lawrence put the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team in an early hole, and the Golden Knights were never able to completely recover as the team dropped a 54-36 decision to the Saints in Liberty League action Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 2-12 overall and 1-7 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence improved to 12-1 and 6-1 in conference games. Clarkson continues its streak of home games this weekend when it takes on William Smith and RIT.

St. Lawrence started off hot from the perimeter as Dylan Watkiss hit a pair of 3-pointers and Ava McCann knocked one down from distance to put St. Lawrence up 11-0 in the first three-plus minutes. Clarkson converted on a pair of free throws to break the ice, and played even the rest of the way with the Saints. It wasn't until McCann hit another 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the first that St. Lawrence was able to regain a nine-point advantage.

McCann and Abby Doin hit 3-pointers at the start of the second to push the advantage back to double figures, but neither team could do much offensively in the final five minutes of the quarter. Only one basket was made in the second portion of the quarter, and that cane with 11 seconds remaining.

The Saints made 7-of-19 shots from behind the 3-point arc in the first half, while Clarkson was able to make only one of its eight attempts from deep.

In the third quarter, St. Lawrence saw its advantage increase to as many as 24 on three occasions, but the Saints wouldn't run away with the contest any further, as Clarkson chipped away at the deficit. However, the Knights didn't have enough firepower to reduce the margin to any fewer than 18, and neither team scored in the final three minutes.

Clarkson's top two scores came off the bench, as Lauryn Withrow led the Knights with 11 points and Cassidy Dumont added 10 points. Lauren Bell chipped in seven rebounds.

St. Lawrence was led by the 13 points from Dylan Watkiss while Ava McCann added nine points. Katie Frederick had eight rebounds and four assists.
