CU Volleyball Splits Versus Top-Ranked Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg

Allentown, PA – Saturday afternoon saw the Clarkson University Volleyball team on the opposite side of two sweeps, falling to top-ranked Johns Hopkins University in three (25-15, 25-16, 25-15) and then following up with a three-set sweep against host Muhlenberg University (25-13, 25-13, 25-16) in a tri-match in Pennsylvania.

The Golden Knights saw their mark go to 14-8 overall, while Johns Hopkins remained unbeaten at 22-0, extending the 2019 NCAA national champion's winning streak to 57 straight matches, and Muhlenberg fell to 9-11.

In the opener, the Knights struggled mightily on offense, delivering 19 kills against 24 errors on 113 attempts. Johns Hopkins had something to do with those errors with a total of six blocks, but the Knights nevertheless had 18 unforced errors in the three-set match.

Alexandra Bergantz led the team on defense with 11 digs, followed closely by Kristin Werdine's 10 digs. Isabelle Crow added 13 assists, an ace, and six digs. Both Gillian Kurtic and Werdine had five kills.

The host Mules took a set from Johns Hopkins earlier in the day, and it appeared as if Clarkson's second match might be a lengthy affair against Muhlenberg. However, the Knights quickly dispatched the hosts thanks to 11 aces and 41 kills in the three-set match.

Werdine produced a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs as well as four aces to lead the way for the Knights, though several others stood out on offense as well. Kristen Liu picked up eight kills, Gillian Kurtic contributed seven kills, and both Annabella Regan and Allyson Treichel recorded six kills against just one error. Isabelle Crow notched 29 assists and Emma Baxter was dynamic in the back row with 24 digs.
