Knights Sweep Union in Return to Liberty League Play

Schenectady, NY – Despite encountering a few rough patches, the Clarkson University Volleyball team had little trouble getting back into the swing of things in its return to conference play on Friday night, downing Union College in straight sets 25-15, 25-6, 25-17 to earn a fourth Liberty League victory.

The Golden Knights improved to 15-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the Dutchwomen remained winless in the Liberty League at 0-6 and dropped to 5-15 overall. Clarkson will look to clinch the third seed in the conference tomorrow when the team faces Skidmore College.

Clarkson trailed after the first point, but the Knights were never behind again, as Gillian Kurtic delivered four kills in the first six points for the Green and Gold to get things rolling offensively. Kurtic would finish with six kills in the set, but the Knights would get away from their grad student middle hitter a little as the set rolled on, with more players beginning to contribute in the opening game's 10-point margin. Allyson Treichel, Kristen Liu, Annabella Regan, and Kristin Werdine each had multiple kills in the first game. The Knights pulled away late, scoring 11 of the final 16 points, a good stretch of which came with Abigail Spector keeping Union off balance from the service line.

The second set was never really in doubt, as the Knights raced out to a double-digit lead in no time due to a strong defense and some unforced errors by the Dutchwomen. After the first set saw the Knights record 16 kills, Clarkson's points came from a variety of different spots. Kurtic, Regan, and Treichel delivered solo blocks, Werdine, Spector and Baxter each produced aces, and six different players recorded kills, led by Treichel's three in set number two.

Set number three looked like it might be a repeat of the second as the Knights were up 20-6 thanks multiple kills from Kurtic, Liu, and Treichel, but Clarkson hit a rough patch late in the set with some unforced errors near the net and at the service line. Although the game was never in doubt, Clarkson called two timeouts late in the set to get back on track, and a point from Kurtic did just that as she ended the set and the match with an emphatic kill.
