Buonanno Busy in Knights 70-52 Win Over Cazenovia

Potsdam, NY – Junior Emma Buonanno was busy on the boards and on defense, coming within three steals of a triple-double, to help lead the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a 70-52 victory over Cazenovia College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-1 on the season and get just a single day off before facing SUNY Canton on the road Monday night. Cazenovia dropped to 2-5 on the year.

Clarkson got off to a slow start, not scoring until more than four minutes had expired from the game clock, but once they were rolling, the team put forth a consistent offensive effort, scoring at least 16 points in each quarter.

Cazenovia opened the game with a 3-0 lead, but the Knights would score 14 straight points, entirely on layups and mid-range jumpers. Clarkson held at least a five-point advantage for the remainder of the game, forcing the Wildcats into turnovers on the press and by jumping passing lanes in Cazenovia's half court offense. Buonanno produced eight points, six rebounds and five steals in the first half as Clarkson led by double digits at the break.

Early in the second half the Knights doubled up Cazenovia, and by the end of the third quarter the Green and Gold had extended their advantage to as many as 23. The Wildcats chipped away in the fourth quarter, pulling to within 13 by mixing in drives to the basket around a trio of 3-pointers, but Clarkson enjoyed a large enough cushion to ride out that run and finished with an 18-point margin.

The Golden Knights struggled from beyond the 3-point arc, shooting just 6-for-26 (23.1%), but made up for the deficiency by getting to loose balls with 16 offensive rebounds. Buonanno recorded six offensive rebounds, including three on one possession, to finish with a game-high 14 boards. She also added 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting and seven steals. Mariah Benavides led all scorers with 20 points and Molly Stewart tossed in 15 points to go along with six boards. Hannah Earl also added 12 points, six assists and three steals.

For Cazenovia, Alexis Tubbs was 4-for-4 from beyond the 3-point arc and scored 16 points overall, a team-high, and added in seven rebounds. Amy Holland also scored 11 points for the Wildcats.
