Knights Cruise to 4-1 Start with Victory at SUNY Canton

Canton, NY – A stifling defensive effort that saw the home team commit 29 turnovers allowed the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to walk away with an easy 57-24 victory over SUNY Canton on Monday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-1 overall with their third straight win, while SUNY Canton dropped to 0-7 on the season. Clarkson is off until the first weekend of December when the team starts conference play against Rensselaer and Union.

It appeared as if Clarkson might challenge its record for fewest points allowed in a game when Canton scored just 10 points in the first three quarters, but a 14-point outburst by SUNY Canton kept them from displacing a two-year school from the Golden Knights' annals.

In the first quarter, Clarkson rolled out to an 11-0 lead through the first five-plus minutes with Canton finally getting on the board with a basket at the 4:19 mark. However, the Kangaroos tallied just two more free throws in the quarter and trailed by 14 through 10 minutes.

Clarkson knocked down the first nine points of the second quarter and pushed out to a 27-4 lead when Elaina Porter finished off a fastbreak layup and hit the ensuing free throw. Canton hit its only basket of the quarter to stop the run, but Clarkson was hardly done, as Molly Stewart hit a 3-pointer from the corner and Claire Flannery converted on the break with a layup in the final minutes for a 38-6 edge at the half.

Clarkson shot 16-for-39 in the first half and forced 19 turnovers, scoring 24 points off SUNY Canton's miscues in the opening 20 minutes. The Roos shot just 2-for-20 and went 0-for-6 from beyond the arc in the opening half.

The Knights were quiet to start the third quarter and finished the period with just three makes in 17 tries, but they still outscored Canton in the period 7-4. With the bench emptied for Clarkson in the fourth, the Roos began to get to the basket and turned the ball over less, as it took less than six minutes for Canton to double their output from the first three periods. With a 30-plus point advantage, however, it mattered little as the Knights cruised to the lopsided win.

No Clarkson players finished in double figures as the playing time was well distributed from the start. Molly Stewart scored nine points in 20 minutes and Mariah Benavides added nine points in 19 minutes. Maddie Pratt added eight points and six rebounds in only 15 minutes. Emma Buonanno recorded five steals in 18 minutes and Hannah Earl had four steals in 17 minutes.
