Stewart Tosses in 20 in Knights' 78-70 Win Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Burying four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team pulled away at a key moment and then held off a late charge by Potsdam, outlasting the Bears 78-70 in non-league action Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 on the season and will face Cazenovia College at home on Saturday afternoon. Potsdam fell to 1-3 on the young season.

After a tight first quarter, the Golden Knights picked up the pace in the early moments of the second quarter, extending their advantage to nine (28-19) after a jumper from Isabelle Sullivan. With 90 seconds left, Potsdam pulled within two (30-28), but on the next possession Claire Flannery buried a 3-pointer from the corner to make it a two-possession game once again.

The third and fourth quarters mirrored the second as the game remained close, but Clarkson held on to its advantage throughout. The Knights pulled out to a nine-point lead, only to see it reduced to one at the 4:03 mark when Dyamon Hunter converted in the lane. Molly Stewart responded with a 3-pointer to push Clarkson back out to four, which was the margin through 30 minutes.

Early in the fourth, Molly Stewart hit a 3-pointer and Rachel Marion buried another to give the Knights a 12-point advantage (62-50) and freshman Mariah Benavides knocked down a 3-pointer at the 5:54 mark to keep Clarkson up by 10. However, Potsdam chipped away down the stretch and pulled to within one on two occasions with less than three minutes to go, but that was as close as the Bears would get. The Knights would get key offensive rebounds down the stretch, and then converted on the second opportunities, none bigger than Molly Stewart's board off a miss, with Hannah Earl hitting a long-range shot shortly after to put the game away with 22 seconds to go.

Senior Molly Stewart scored a game-high 20 points, shooting 7-for-16 from the floor with four 3-pointers, while adding seven rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes. Emma Buonanno played her normal hustling style and picked up 14 points with five boards and three steals while Hannah Earl tossed in 16 points. Lauren Bell came off the bench for eight points and 11 rebounds in just 17 minutes.

For Potsdam, Dyamon Hunter scored a team-high 19 points on 9-for-14 shooting while both Devyn Elliott (15 points, 9 rebounds) and Jakia Howard (15 points, 7 rebounds) were just short of double-doubles. Caroline LaFountain also scored 17 points for the Bears.
