Knights Take A Pair From SUNY Potsdam, 15-7 and 4-3

Potsdam, NY – Starting things off with runs in the top of the first of both games, the Clarkson University Softball team won its home-opening doubleheader against SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday afternoon, gaining a 15-7 win in the first contest and a 4-3 victory in game two at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-14-1 on the season while SUNY Potsdam dropped to 3-13. The games were originally scheduled for SUNY Potsdam, but the games were moved across town a few hours before the first pitch due to field conditions, giving the Knights a surprise home-opener. Clarkson is scheduled to host Union and Ithaca this weekend in four Liberty League contests, but the games may be moved due to inclement weather.

In the first game, Clarkson struck early and often, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two-run homer from Summer Lancette and then adding six in the top of the second. Danielle Whitham pushed home the first run with a groundout to make it 3-0 but Hannah Bowen quickly followed with a two-run single to make the score 5-0. Bridget Woolley and Liz Caggiano each delivered run-scoring singles and Michele Winn grounded out to force home another run to put Clarkson up 8-0.

Instead of folding, Potsdam responded with five runs in the bottom half of the second. Sarah Hyland drew a bases loaded walk to put the Bear son the board and a wild pitch allowed another run to score. Brooke Falsion then plated two with a double and an error allowed one more Potsdam run to cross.

The offense continued in the top of the third as Bridget Woolley doubled Bowen and Lancette and then scored herself on a single from Kat Plescow to put Clarkson up 11-5. Things were relatively quiet until the bottom of the fifth when Lauren Brace homered to make it 11-6, but the Knights returned the advantage to six runs in top of the six when Samm Swiesz forced in a run with a groundout. A throwing error in the bottom half of the inning got Potsdam back within five, though the reduced margin was brief. Clarkson scored three more times in the top of seventh with the key hit coming off the bat of Michele Winn, who plated a pair with a double down the right field line.

Hannah Bowen finished the first game 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two more driven in, while Summer Lancette was 2-for-3 with two walks, scoring four times. Bridget Woolley was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three driven in, and Plescow went 3-for-3 with two walks. Winn also drove in three runs on a 3-for-5 effort. For Potsdam, Falsion, Brace and Hyland each enjoyed multi-hit games.

The offenses were relatively muted in game two, though Clarkson struck for a run in the first inning and looked to be off to the races again. Caggiano singled home a run in the first and Clarkson would strike for two more in the top of the third, with another run-scoring hit coming from Caggiano, who doubled home Bridget Woolley. Kyrstin Messier singled home pinch-runner Riley LeBourveau to put the Knights up 3-0 and Clarkson added another run in the fourth on a throwing error.

That would be all of the scoring for the Knights, but Potsdam slowly chipped away at the Clarkson advantage. A two-out single from Grace Folmsbee in the fourth made it 4-1 and a Lauren Brace single in the fifth reduced the deficit to two runs. In the bottom of the seventh, Brace delivered a solid single to center to score Lucy Condon to make it 4-3, but Summer Lancette ended the threat with a sprawling catch, coming in on a blooper from Megan Fish to record the third out of the seventh.

Plescow again was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 in game two, while Caggiano drove in two with a 2-for-4 effort. Messier finished 3-for-4 and Mennig went 2-for-4 for the Knights. For Potsdam, Samantha Hubinsky, Lauren Brace and Grace Folmsbee each had two hits.

Maggie Stark earned the win for Clarkson, going five innings and allowing seven hits and just a single walk. Leah Allen came on for the final two frames, picking up her first save of the season. Hubinsky took the loss for Potsdam in game two.
