Middlebury Holds Off Clarkson Comeback, 53-49

Potsdam, NY – Senior Madison Shea had a near triple-double with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, but the effort wasn't enough as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team's comeback attempt came up short against Middlebury College on Sunday afternoon, as the Panthers came away with a 53-49 victory over the Golden Knights in non-league action.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 3-2 on the season, but they will look to get back on track on Tuesday when they take on crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam. Middlebury remains unbeaten at 4-0.

A slow start saw the Knights fall behind by five before Emma Buonanno made a baseline 14-footer at the 6:03 mark to get Clarkson on the scoreboard, and following a 3-pointer from Madison Shea a minute later, the Green and Gold and Middlebury played even. Molly Stewart assured the two teams of a tie after 10 minutes with a late 3-pointer as Middlebury's late long-range shot was short at the buzzer. The Panthers, however, found some offensive rhythm in the second quarter, going on a 12-1 run in the first 5:40 of the period, with the streak being capped off by an Emily Wander 15-foot jumper at 4:19. Clarkson's Raeanna Dunn ended an 0-for-8 streak from the field for the Knights at 3:58 to get the Knights back to within single digits and two more free throws from Dunn in the final two minutes got the Green and Gold to a margin of seven. A layup in the final minute for Middlebury pushed the margin back to nine for the half.

Madison Shea had nine first half points by going 3-for-5 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers, but the rest of the Knights shot just 4-for-23 (17.4%). Catherine Harrison produced a near double-double in the first 20 minutes with eight points and seven boards as Middlebury held a 23-13 advantage on the glass.

After the anemic second quarter, Clarkson started making some shots from the perimeter in the third quarter, burying four 3-pointers to reduce an 11-point margin down to two on a pair of occasions. Raeanna Dunn hit a 3-pointer at 1:56 to make the score 39-37 and Devin Sorell followed with a 3-pointer at 1:03 to again get Clarkson to within two (42-40).

The game remained close throughout the fourth quarter, but that was more a product of poor shooting by both teams in the final 10 minutes. Clarkson went just 2-for-16 from the floor, while Middlebury was 2-for-13 from the field in the final 10 minutes. However, the Panthers took advantage from the free throw line, going 7-for-10 overall compared to Clarkson's four makes. The Knights were within one point on two occasions and, down by three in the final 20 seconds, Molly Stewart got a good look from the arc in an attempt to tie the game, but Middlebury got the rebound and was able to hold on for the win.

Shea produced 15 points, 9 boards, 7 assists and 2 steals before fouling out with 10 seconds left in the game, while Sorell scored nine of her 10 points in the second half. Sorell's second 3-pointer of the third quarter allowed her to become Clarkson's all-time leader in that category, passing Katie Goldberg's total of 154 from 2007-2011. Dunn also finished with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals in 24 minutes off the bench for Clarkson. For Middlebury, no player finished in double figures, but Catherine Harrison had 8 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocked shots in 23 minutes, and Alex Huffman recorded 7 points, 9 boards and 4 assists.
