Knights Win Rivalry Game with 69-54 Victory Over SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Devin Sorell poured in 29 points with five 3-pointers and Madison Shea recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a 69-54 victory over SUNY Potsdam Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-2 on the season and will begin Liberty League play this weekend at Skidmore and Rensselaer. Potsdam dropped to 1-3 on the season.

The Bears started off strong with points in each of their first three possessions to take a 6-0 lead, but Clarkson's defense started to close out long and not allow the same kind of shots for the next few minutes. The Knights went on a 9-0 run of their own, capped off by a Devin Sorell lay up, but Potsdam responded with five straight points to regain the lead. Sorell then hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Madison Shea closed out the quarter with another 3-pointer to push Clarkson's advantage to nine.

At the start of the second quarter, Sorell banged home another 3-pointer to give Clarkson a 12-point advantage, but the Knights didn't convert another field goal attempt for nearly six minutes as Potsdam crawled back into contention. Potsdam trimmed the lead to as little as one (28-27), but Sorell hit a pair of free throws in the last minute to give the Knights a three-point edge at the half.

Abbey Smith accounted for nearly three-quarters of Potsdam's offense, scoring 20 points on 7-for-8 shooting, including five 3-pointers. Clarkson got half of its points from Devin Sorell, who tossed in 15 points, though Maddison Shea also chipped in seven points and five rebounds.

Potsdam pulled to within one at the start of the third quarter, but the Knights rattled off seven straight points as Devin Sorell hit a 3-pointer at the 7:05 mark to give Clarkson a 37-29 lead. On two occasions, Potsdam would get back to within three, but each time the Knights responded with a 3-pointer at the other end. Up by five with a minute left in the quarter, Clarkson scored a layup and a free throw as Kati Gotch finished off a pass from Madison Shea on the break. Two more free throws in the final seconds of the period by Shea pushed the Knights lead to 10.

The Bears could never get closer than eight points in the fourth quarter, as Clarkson continually had an answer for any Potsdam basket. In the bonus down the stretch, Clarkson went 9-for-10 from the free throw line to push the margin to 15 points at the buzzer.

Sorell went 5-for-12 from beyond the 3-point arc and finished with 29 points in 40 minutes of action. Shea also never left the court, scoring 12 points and adding in 11 rebounds and six assists. Molly Stewart also nearly had a double-double with 14 points and nine boards. For Potsdam, Abbey Smith scored 22, but only two of those points came in the second half. Riley
Luckie finished with 13 points, going 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
