Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Burns Notches Season-High 26 Points In Loss at Plattsburgh State, 76-72

Plattsburgh, NY – Junior Braeden Burns recorded a season-best 26 points and freshman Nate Abernethy nearly matched him with 22, but the duo's effort was not quite enough for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team as the Golden Knights suffered a 76-72 defeat to Plattsburgh State on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 5-5 on the year and Plattsburgh stayed above .500 at 5-3. Clarkson seeks revenge for an early season loss to St. Lawrence when the two teams match up for a second time this year on Monday afternoon in Canton.

Clarkson gained an early lead thanks to a quick 6-0 run in the opening minutes that made it 9-4 at 15:49 following a Nate Abernethy jumper. Plattsburgh responded with an 11-2 run over a stretch of less than five minutes as Reem Welch began to get looks inside. Clarkson began to get some stops at the other end and got back to within two off a layup from Steve DeRegis at 5:45, but the Cardinals would hold off that run and punched back with six points in less than a minute to take a first-half high lead of eight points (29-21). Braeden Burns took over Clarkson's offense for the final few ticks of the first half, getting to the basket in a number of different ways, eventually tying the game at 31-31 at 1:13. Reem Welch scored at the other end to help the Cardinals take the lead heading into the locker room.

The two teams had incredibly even stats at the break, with both recording 20 rebounds as well as being separated by just one make (Clarkson 13-for-34 from the floor, Plattsburgh 14-for-35).

Clarkson's frontcourt continued to roll at the start of the second half, producing 16 points in all over a stretch of just five minutes, as Abernethy knocked in six points and Burns and Aydin Kocak each added five in that brief stretch to put the Knights back up for the first time since the score was 9-6 early in the opening half. Plattsburgh weathered that run and rallied back to tie the game and then went on a 15-2 run in a stretch of four minutes. During that brief time frame, the Golden Knights struggled from the perimeter while the Cardinals made multiple 3-pointers from the left-hand side of the court, including back-to-back makes from David McKnight, Jr. and Mari Johnson. That rush gave Plattsburgh a double-digit lead and the Cardinals held a nine-point advantage with just over four minutes to go.

Clarkson began to chip away, eventually getting back to within two after pair of free throw makes by Nate Abernethy with 1:35 to go, but Plattsburgh made enough free throws down the stretch to keep its lead and escape with the win.

Burns scored 16 of his team-high 26 points in the second half, shooting 10-for-17 overall from the field. Abernethy added a double-double thanks to his 22 points and 10 rebounds. Clarkson utilized its forwards throughout the contest as the Knights' long-range shots were generally not falling (6-for-24 from beyond the arc).

For Plattsburgh, Reem Welch finished with 26 points and nine boards, going 11-for-21 from the floor. Elijah Morris chipped in 14 points and six assists and Khalil Screen snagged 12 rebounds for the Cardinals.
