Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knights Double Up Bears, 18-9

Potsdam, NY – Getting on the scoreboard early and often, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team raced out to a seven-goal lead in the opening quarter and cruised from there, claiming a 18-9 victory over SUNY Potsdam on a chilly Wednesday night at Hantz Field.

A strong start allowed the Golden Knights to improve to 7-5 on the season while the Bears dropped back below .500 at 5-6. Clarkson faces RIT on Saturday where the Knights will celebrate the senior members of the squad.

Zipping around the field on both offense and defense, the Knights created offense through defense, forcing five turnovers in the first period and allowing Potsdam to successfully clear the zone only twice on six tries. That helped create a lopsided shot differential in which the Knights led 14-3 in the opening 15 minutes, resulting in seven goals. Madelynn Barnum scored the first three goals before five minutes was off the clock, making the 12th consecutive give this season where she has tallied at least three goals. However, the offense diversified over the remainder of the quarter as Makenna Cassin, Brooklynne Perrigo, Morgan Kenna, and Lauren Shanahan each found the back of the net.

Ending the first quarter on a missed scoring opportunity, it didn't take long for Clarkson to continue its roll in the second. Barnum scored twice at the start of the second and Sydney Nakas pushed the Knights to a 10th goal with only three minutes off the clock. However, Clarkson's offense went quiet for a bit before Riley Kuczma tallied, but Potsdam ended its scoring drought with a goal in the final minutes to end Clarkson's shutout bid.

Buoyed by its end of the half goal, SUNY Potsdam evened things out in the third quarter, scoring four times in the quarter and lifting the game from a running clock for the tail end of the period. In fact, a goal from Lindsey LaDue in the waning seconds pulled Potsdam to within eight for the third time in the quarter.

One more push was necessary for Potsdam to truly get back into the game, but Clarkson kept the Bears behind at a fair distance. The lead for Clarkson continued to float between running clock and a stoppages on whistles as the Knights returned their lead to double digits on three occasions in the quarter.

A frequent connection for the Knights was Barnum and Cranfield, and the duo unsurpisingly led on offense. Cranfield had seven assists in the game while Barnum scored six goals. Brooklynne Perrigo found the back of the net three times, Lauren Shanahan produced three points in her first action of the season, and Sydney Nakas also delivered three points. Nakas also won 12 draws for the Knights.

For Potsdam, Lindsey LaDue notched five points on three goals and two assists and Megan MacWilliams had four points on three goals and one assist.

Clarkson dominated on draws (23-7) and in total shots (36-17), but shots on goal were closer (26-15). Each team split its goalie play, with Riley Donovan making three stops in the first half and Jennaca McGill making three saves in the second half for Clarkson, while Kimora Swamp had four saves in the opening 30 minutes for Potsdam and Olivia Minarich had four denials in the final 30 minutes.
