CU Volleyball Splits in Home Opener

Potsdam, NY – On its first home date of 2024, the Clarkson University Volleyball team had to settle for a split, as the Golden Knights lost in five sets to Hartwick, but rallied to beat Oswego State in four sets on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-4 on the season with the split. Clarkson heads to Pennsylvania next weekend for matches against Mid-Atlantic teams, taking on Montclair State, Franklin and Marshall, and Virginia Wesleyan.

In the first set, Clarkson trailed early but picked up the advantage near the midway point, lead for the first time at 10-9. The Knights held the advantage at 16-14, only to see Hartwick rattle off five straight to claim a three-point advantage. That would be the margin for the next few points, as Clarkson called a timeout down 21-18. Out of the break, Marin Hangliter scored a kill and then Ashley Currier and Allyson Treichel combined for a block on consecutive points to tie the set. Anna Mayer then picked up back-to-back aces, as the Knights won the opener 25-22.

Hartwick came out of the gate strong in the second set, winning five of the first six points and seven of the first 10. The Hawks led 15-8 after a kill from Staecia Silofau, but the Green and Gold scored seven of the next eight to cut the margin to one. That would be as close as it would get, though, as Hartwick had just enough to keep Clarkson from tying the game. Aaliyah Williams had back-to-back kills to help the Hawks even things up at 1-1.

In the third, Clarkson frustrated the Hawks offensively, forcing them into a match-high eight attack errors. On the other side of the net, the Golden Knights remained steady, hitting 12 kills against just four errors in 36 swings. The two teams were tied at 4-4, but Clarkson scored four straight and held at least a three-point edge for the remainder of the set.

The fourth saw Hartwick start off with the first three points, holding a small advantage until the midway spot where Clarkson pulled within one (12-11). Things remained close for the next dozen points, but each team went on small runs down the stretch. Hartwick scored three straight to make it 21-17 only to watch the Knights pick up five straight, including three kills by Hangliter, for a 22-21 advantage for the home team. That was it for scoring for the Green and Gold, however, as a kill, two attack errors, and an ace ended the game.

The Hawks carried that momentum from the fourth set into the fifth, scoring eight of the first nine points to put the Knights in an early hole. Although Clarkson got within five on three occasions, the big deficit proved too much to overcome.

On offense, Marin Hangliter led the team with 19 kills and on 55 swings while also contributing 19 digs. Allyson Treichel hit .346 with a dozen kills and also added eight blocks (one solo, seven assists). Grace Hanson contributed 11 kills on offense. Ashley Currier had 17 assists and 18 digs, Anna Mayer was just short of a double-double with 29 assists and eight digs, and Abigail Spector delivered 26 digs from the back row.

For Hartwick, Staecia Silofau produced 18 kills and 12 digs, Shaelyn Thornton had 14 kills and 23 digs, and Shelby Swartz notched 12 kills and 16 digs. Braelyn Hornick had 49 assists, 17 digs, and three block assists.

Oswego was coming off a three-game sweep against Hartwick prior to its match against the Knights, but the third set showed the Lakers picking up momentum. They carried that into the opener against Clarkson, winning the first three points and holding the lead for much of the start. Eventually Clarkson found a foothold offensively and picked up the advantage once the scores reached double figures. A solid run in the late-teens saw Clarkson win five of six points, including three kills from Treichel, to make it 20-13. Although the Lakers rallied to within three a few times, Clarkson ended the set on an Anna Mayer kill at 25-21.

Set two saw the teams exchange small runs in the early going before trading points around the midway point. Oswego gained a five-point lead (17-12) only to see Clarkson trim it to one on a kill from Mayer (19-18). Clarkson would tie the set a few points later, but the Lakers scored four of the final five to even the match at a set apiece.

Clarkson rolled out to a significant lead in the third, going up 12-5 on back-to-back blocks from Tess Sorel and involving both Haley and Ashley Currier. The Knights pushed the advantage to seven on a few other occasions, including a set point at 24-17 after Tess Sorel delivered a kill. Oswego rallied with five straight, but a ball handling error ended the streak.

That would be the last gasp for the Lakers, as the Knights began the fourth set in dominating fashion, rushing out to a 14-2 lead. Despite the best efforts of Oswego, the deficit was far too vast to overcome, and Clarkson cruised to the win.

Allyson Treichel finished the second match with a .480 hitting percentage, striking 14 kills against just two errors on 25 swings. Hangliter and Tess Sorel each added nine kills, and Ashley Currier had eight kills. Anna Mayer found the floor for six kills and also had 32 assists, 19 digs, and 4 aces. Abigail Spector picked up 26 digs for the second straight match. Sorel also excelled defensively, recording eight blocks (three solo, five assists).

Cara Simplicio led Oswego State with nine kills, while Priscilla McReynolds added eight kills. Mya Bush had 17 assists and Harper Phinney chipped in 12 assists. Simplicio also had 15 digs.
