Game Recap: Men's Baseball |

Knights Split With Hobart on Sunday

Potsdam, NY – Twice the Clarkson University Baseball team came back from an early deficit, but only once did the Golden Knights hold the lead throughout as the Green and Gold picked up a split against Hobart College, winning game one by a score of 9-5 but dropping game two 9-7 in 11 innings on Sunday.

The Golden Knights saw their record move to 9-16 overall while Hobart saw a winning streak snapped in the split, going to 15-12 on the year. Clarkson faces St. Lawrence University on Friday and Saturday, with the first game of the series set to be played in Potsdam at Jack Phillips Stadium.

In game one, Hobart jumped out to a five-run lead before Clarkson even came up for its first at bat. Will Jones singled in Christian Petry for the first run and then a second one came around on a sacrifice fly by Connor O'Neil. A double steal scored a third run and then hits from Nate Garrett and Jack Byrnes gave the Statesmen a 5-0 lead.

Clarkson clawed back with a run in the bottom of the first as CJ Cartier singled and then moved up on two wild pitches. Pat Elliott's hard single to left plated Cartier for the first run for the Knights. Clarkson picked up two more in the bottom of the third, playing a bit of small ball. Twice in the inning the Knights laid down solid bunts to move runners over, but both times the bunts were so well placed that the runners reached. Joe Pagano hit a sac fly to score the first run in the third and then Cam Jerrett's bunt single squeezed home another to make it 5-3.

The Knights came all the way back with five more in the bottom of the fourth. Joe Figliolino singled to center and moved to third on an error that allowed Jake Millich to reach. Robert Fratangelo singled home Figliolino and Kent Wilson loaded the bases with a bunt single. A grounder to short appeared to be a tailor-made double play ball, but it was misplayed, allowing two runs to come in and giving the Knights the lead. James Mason's two-run single pushed the Knights to an 8-5 advantage.

Both team's bats were quiet for the next few frames, but Clarkson picked up an insurance run in the eighth when Cam Jerrett delivered an RBI single to score Wilson.

Five Clarkson hitters finished with multiple hits, led by James Mason's 3-for-4 effort. Carter Gould picked up the win in relief, throwing five hitless innings in the middle of the game and striking out four in that stretch. Derrick Lewis earned a multi-inning save, throwing three frames and allowing just one hit.

Game two was much like the first contest when Hobart jumped out to a 5-1 lead, though this time it didn't all come in one inning. The Statesmen scored twice in the first, once in the third, and two more times in the fifth. Meanwhile, Clarkson had just one run in the first four innings, a solo home run from Cam Jerrett. The Knights would come back with four runs in the fifth to tie the game. Aidan Kuefner drove home Jerrett with a two-out single, and two batters later Figliolino scored Kuefner with a liner to enter. After a wild pitch and a walk, the bases were loaded for Kent Wilson, and he drove a single to right to score two more, tying the game at 5-5.

Clarkson went ahead in the bottom of the seventh, beginning with a one-out walk to Figliolino. After Fratangelo grounded out to move Figliolino to second, an errant throw from second on a play at first sent the sophomore catcher racing home to put the score at 6-5.

Hobart was in a position to tie the game in the eighth with runners at first and third when Nate Johnson dropped down a bunt in front of the plate. Hunter Geisler rushed in to pick up the ball and looked like he might try for first, but instead flipped the ball to Figliolino, who placed the tag down on Gavin Brignall at the plate, keeping the Knights up one. Nevertheless, Hobart would score in the top of the ninth. Will Jones singled and then moved to third on a double by Sean Garvin that was just under the glove of Cartier at third. With the infield in, a hard grounder to short was smothered by Cam Jerrett, but his throw to the plate was just a little late, allowing the tying run to come home.

Clarkson had another solid defensive play to help keep the Statesmen off the board in the 10th inning, though it happened on an error. On a failed pickoff attempt, the ball scooted far away from Wilson at first base, allowing Nate Johnson to take second easily. However, in Johnson's attempt to make it to third, Wilson unleashed a long throw from near the fence on the first base side to nab Johnson and end the inning.

Hobart would pick up three in the 11th inning. With two outs and a runner on first, Sean Garvin extended the inning by reaching on an error. Bolduc then singled to center to score Ty Gallagher, and both Garvin and Bolduc moved up on the throw at the plate that went to the backstop. Connor O'Neil immediately followed with a two-run single to left, putting the score at 9-6.

Winning pitcher Nicholas Franceschi struggled with his control a bit in the bottom half of the inning as he walked four in the frame, including one that gave Figliolino an RBI. With two outs and the tying run in scoring position, Fratangelo fell in an 0-2 hole and tried to call time on the third pitch, but it wasn't granted by the umpire, forcing him to take a defensive swing late, which resulted in a pop up to second to end the game.

Both bullpens did well down the stretch. Hunter Geisler was stuck with a tough loss, as he went six innings in relief, striking out three with just a single earned run. Jack Byrnes allowed one unearned run in 3.1 innings and Franceschi followed with three hitless innings, though he did walk five and gave up one run in the relief win.
