Career Milestones Set, But Clarkson Falls at Union 17-15

Schenectady, NY – Individual milestones came in the first quarter, third quarter, and fourth quarter for members of the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team, but unfortunately the Golden Knights were not able to celebrate those numbers with a win, as the Green and Gold fell to Union College 17-15 on Friday afternoon.

Clarkson saw its mark fall to 8-5 overall and 3-4 in Liberty League games, while the Garnet Chargers improved to 7-4 and 5-2. Clarkson looks to get back on track when the team takes on Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon.

It was a close contest throughout as neither team had more than a two-goal lead until midway through the second quarter. The two teams traded goals in the opening quarter, including Hailey Millington's 100th career point on a goal that tied the game 2-2 near the end of the period. Clarkson had a 6-4 lead when Madelynn Barnum scored at the 8:00 mark, but the Garnet Chargers scored four in the final six minutes, including two in the last 25 seconds, to take an 8-6 lead at the half.

Barnum quickly scored at the start of the third quarter, her fourth goal of the game and 54th of the season, setting a new single-season standard for Clarkson, surpassing the 53 scored by both Alyssa Cristaldi and Katie VanDeValk in the 2013 season. Barnum was far from through in the third, as she scored two more times, including the last goal of the period, one that would tie the game at 11-11 heading in the fourth.

At the start of the fourth, the two teams again traded goals, but Union scored three goals in a span of less than 90 seconds to take a 15-12 advantage by the 8:54 mark, forcing the Golden Knights to call a timeout to regroup. Ninety seconds later, Julia Lavarnway found the netting to reduce the gap to two, but another Union goal only 12 seconds later returned the margin to three. Clarkson fought back two more times to get within two, but could never drop it to one, as Union held on for the win.

Clarkson's 14th goal of the game in the fourth saw Barnum and Lavarnway connect for a goal, as Lavarnway's assist gave her 200 points for her career at Clarkson. She also surpassed 100 career assists in the game.

Barnum scored eight times in the game while Lavarnway produced seven points on three goals and four assists. Barnum's big game has her just one goal shy of tying the career mark at Clarkson (Cristaldi, 182). She also had 10 draws and five groundballs in the game.

For Union, Anna Smith scored four goals and added two assists for six points and Greta Maurer matched that total with three goals and three assists. Gillian Joseph also scored four times for the Chargers. Maurer also had seven draws and caused two turnovers.

Union had a narrow lead in shots (32-28), though the gap was larger in terms of shots on goal (27-19). Clarkson won the battle on the ground (17-15) and at the draw (18-16). Clare Tucker made nine saves in net for Clarkson in the first 56-plus minutes, while Sydney Widlitz and Hannah Dubinsky each made two stops for the Chargers.
