Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Last Second Goal Sends Knights to 1-0 Defeat Versus Brown

Potsdam, NY – Following nearly 60 minutes of scoreless play, a tip-in off a rebound with less than second remaining sent the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a 1-0 defeat against Brown University in ECAC Hockey action Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights dropped to 8-4-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in league play, while Brown picked up its first victory of the season, going to 1-3-1 both overall and in conference. Clarkson faces Yale at 4:00 pm on Saturday afternoon to close out the weekend.

Post Game with Coach Houle

What must have seemed like the most improbable goal of the season thus far, Brown was able to win a faceoff in the Clarkson defensive zone after an icing call. Right off the faceoff, the puck drifted back to Ethan Mistry, who took a shot from the center point. The puck appeared to get deflected somehow in front and fell back to the ice where Charlie Gollob was able to flip the puck past Clarkson's Ethan Langenegger with just 0.5 seconds remaining. Clarkson hoped for some intervention from the officials in the way of either an interference call or a high stick, but the goal stood to allow Brown to escape with the win.

For a game that didn't have any goals scored until the very last second, it was no surprise that offensive chances were few and far between at the start, as the two teams combined for just 10 total shots on goal in the opening period. The best chance for either team probably came when Erik Bargholtz hit the post from the bottom of the right circle at the 17:24 mark of the first period.

Although the shots increased in the second stanza it was more of the same compared to the opening period. Most shots on goal were not particularly challenging for either goaltender, though Ethan Langenegger stood out for an early save in the second. Brendan Clark ended up alone in the slot with a free chance to pick his spot and hit a hard shot to the bottom left of the goal. Langenegger was there, however, robbing Clark with a glove save in the opening minute.

In the third period, each team had a chance on the power play, but both came up empty. Brown was unable to get any shots on the goal during its two-minute stretch with the extra skater. Clarkson was somewhat busier, but its two shots on goal were denied by Lawton Zacher and a few others were denied on blocks by the Brown defense.

Brown went without a shot on goal for more than 17 minutes of the third period, but the Bears offense got rolling late in the period, challenging Langenegger. His best stop late came when he went post-to-post to make two saves, the first with a pad and then smothering the second chance. Just 30 seconds later, Clarkson had a chance as well with a 2-on-1 as Trey Taylor skated alone against Zacher, but was denied by the left blocker and skate. That stop proved key, as Brown was able to score with less than a second remaining on the clock.

Clarkson finished with a 29-16 edge in shots on goal and nearly doubled up the Bears in total shots at 66-34. Neither team was successful on the power play in five total chances, though one lasted just the last half second of the game. Langenegger made 15 saves for the Knights and Zacher stopped 29.
