Potsdam, N.Y.- A goal in each half canceled each other out as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team tied nearby rival, St. Lawrence, 1-1, Tuesday evening.
With the result Clarkson moves to 5-6-4 overall, 2-3-3 in league play.
In a Liberty League matchup with big playoff implications, the teams opened up play on a rainy evening with a back-and-forth battle on a slick surface at Hantz Field. Both sides created several chances over the opening quarter of an hour. St. Lawrence managed the first opportunity of the game a little over two minutes in as Alyvia Ronning connected on a shot from outside the box, but Molly DiCaprio was up to the task, collecting the shot as it skidded across the wet surface.
Clarkson countered with a decent chance of their own a few minutes later at the 6 minute mark as Paige Ford received a pass from the left side at the top of the 18 yard box. The forward managed to work the ball onto her right foot, squeezing a shot towards goal that rolled into the grasp of Darcie McDonough. As the rain continued to fall, Clarkson continued to push for the opener, as the Knights began to settle in and control more possession in the middle-third.
The Knights' pressure would eventually pay off in the 40th minute as the Green and Gold found the breakthrough. Ford managed to gain possession of a long ball forward on the left wing, turning her defender and firing a right-footed blast on goal. The knuckle-ball seemed to catch the St. Lawrence goalie wrong-footed as she blocked the shot up in the air at the penalty-spot. The loose ball found the head of Emma Robinson who deflected it back up into the air to her left foot, managing a shot that rebounded square off the crossbar. As the ball shot back up into the air back into the penalty box, Robinson was the first on the scene again this time sending a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner for the 1-0 lead.
A large band of thunder and lightning moving across the area caused a weather delay at the 5:06 mark in the first half.
When play resumed an hour and a half later, both teams used the extended break to their advantage, ending the first 45 minutes with a newfound sense of urgency.
The second half began in a similar fashion to the end of the first as both teams began jockeying back and forth, looking to build momentum after such an extended spell in the locker rooms.
Against the run of play, St. Lawrence managed to fashion a scoring opportunity just over five minutes into the half. A quick counterattack opportunity opened up for Lily Pleau on the right wing who whipped in an early cross to the middle of the penalty box. Madison King-Thurber found herself on the end of it, placing a controlled right-footed finish into the top-left corner of the goal, knotting things up at 1-1.
With both sides going back and forth in possession and taking turns sending long-balls over the others' defensive backline, chances were not readily presented as the clearing storm turned into a beautiful October night. With about a minute left in regulation, a cleared ball forward out of the back from Clarkson dropped over the head of a SLU defender leaving Callie Abel with a breakaway and a chance to take all three points for the Knights. The sophomore managed to control the ball initially but a loose second touch sent the ball skidding across the wet turf, close enough for McDonough to collect.
DiCaprio was credited with five saves for the Knights as McDonough registered five of her own for the visitors.
Clarkson held an advantage in shots (18-7), and corners (4-3), while both teams were equal with their accuracy on net (6-6).
