Clarkson Sweeps Hamilton to Improve to 4-0

Potsdam, NY –A balanced effort on offense led the Clarkson University Volleyball team to its fourth straight win to open 2023 as the Golden Knights defeated Hamilton College in straight sets on Friday night, 25-15, 27-25, 25-20, at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-0 on the year and will face Oswego State (1-3) on Saturday afternoon. The Continentals dropped to 1-1, and will look to earn a split on the weekend as they face St. Lawrence on Saturday.

The opening set saw the two teams mostly exchange points in the early going, but following a kill from Marin Hangliter, the Knights went on a 6-0 run and never looked back. Two kills from Allyson Treichel, an ace from Hangliter, and a kill from Galante highlighted the run, giving the Green and Gold some separation. Hamilton did get back within four points on three occasions, but the Knights won seven of the final eight points in the set to end with a margin in double figures.

In the early going of the second set, it appeared as if the Knights would run away with another win. Clarkson was up by five (11-6) thanks to a pair of Hamilton errors and a kill from Galante, and the Knights eventually edged out to as many as six on two occasions (20-14, 22-16). Hamilton's offense got rolling late in that set, however, with two kills from Elodie McGeiver and two more from Kendall Scholz, reducing the deficit to just one. The Continentals came all the way back to tie the set at 23-23 and eventually forced the Knights into three set points. Clarkson converted on its third try when a ball handling error ended the game.

Despite the loss in the second set, Hamilton used the momentum to rush out to a five-point lead in the third, forcing the Knights to call a timeout and regroup as the squad struggled a bit on serve receive and getting into a rhythm offensively. Clarkson snapped out of it fairly quickly, picking up points on back-to-back blocking plays and then earning kills from Hangliter and Emily Alexander. Clarkson took the lead at 11-10 and never trailed again. Down the stretch the teams alternated points, but Clarkson picked up the final tallies from Allyson Treichel, as the junior middle recorded a solo block and a service ace to end the set and the match.

Galante had 11 kills and 11 digs and Hangliter nearly recorded a double-double with eight kills and 10 digs. Isabelle Crow hit .538 in the match with eight kills and just one error in 13 attempts, while also adding in two aces and 12 assists. Abigail Spector led the defense with 17 digs, Anna Mayer also chipped in 13 assists, Cecelia Velardi had three aces, and Emily Alexander had six kills and a .417 hitting percentage.

For Hamilton, Elodie McGeiver produced a .444 hitting percentage (8-0-18) and Kate Carman matched her kills total with eight as well. Rylee Bergeron recorded 20 digs, and Melissa Morelli notched 18 assists.
