Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

20th-Ranked Knights Fall to 4th-Ranked William Smith, 3-0

Geneva, NY – Some early chances just missed their mark for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, as the 20th-ranked Golden Knights suffered a 3-0 defeat to fourth-ranked William Smith College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-2-2 overall and 1-2-0 in conference games, while William Smith improved to 6-0-3 and 2-0-2 in league. Clarkson gets a seven-day break before returning to the road to take on Ithaca College next Saturday.

Clarkson more than held its own against William Smith in the first half of Saturday's contest, outshooting the Herons 11-7 in the first 45 minutes, including a pair of shots off the foot of Lillian Gillett just 30 seconds into the game. Gillett broke free in the penalty area and had a shot in close that was denied by Kirsten Nelson, and the rebound was also smothered by Nelson. Roughly 10 minutes into the game, Emily Davis also had a hard shot from about 25 yards out that just missed the crossbar by about a foot.

William Smith had some chances in the first half as well, though the best opportunity might have come in the final five minutes when a soft shot got past Molly DiCaprio, but ended up bouncing off the far post to keep the game scoreless at the half.

The Herons would break the scoreless tie just a few minutes into the second half. A long pass saw a William Smith player offside, but a deflection allowed the play to go on, providing Julia Dimenna some time to work, and she patiently waited to find a good time to make her shot, which rolled in at 47:36. William Smith picked up an insurance goal at 72:27, gaining possession off a turnover near midfield. Moira van der Putt got in close against DiCaprio, and her first shot was denied by the goalkeeper's hands, but since it was a hard shot in close, the rebound fell to the turf and van der Putt was able to tap in the rebound.

Late in the game, the Herons picked up a third goal, again with DiCaprio making the initial save. A deflection provided the opportunity as the ball bounced to Ava Ruppersberger on the opposite side of the penalty area. Ruppersberger's shot was tipped away by a diving DiCaprio, but Emma Faso followed up the attempt by playing it down to her feet and putting the ball into an otherwise empty goal.

William Smith finished the game with a 25-15 edge in shots, which included an 18-4 advantage in the second half. Shots on goal were 16-7 in favor of the Herons as well. DiCaprio recorded a career-high 13 saves in the game, while Nelson made seven stops for William Smith.
