Lopol Scores Twice in Knights 3-0 Blanking of Nazareth

Potsdam, NY – Senior Maddie Lopol scored early in the first and picked up a goal on a penalty kick midway through the second to help lift the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team past Nazareth University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-0-0 on the young season while Nazareth fell to 0-1-1. Clarkson heads to Pennsylvania next weekend for a pair of neutral site games, facing Rutgers-Newark on Friday and Case Western Reserve on Sunday.

Clarkson controlled the game from the outset, putting pressure on Nazareth with a couple of shots on goal in the first four minutes of the game. Just a few minutes later the Golden Knights got on the board as the team picked up possession near midfield. Lillian Gillett showed some patience drawing defenders towards her as she carried the ball up field about 30 yards out, allowing Maddie Lopol to create some space with no one on her. Gillett eventually sent a pass square to Lopol, and she took a shot from just outside the penalty area, going into the top corner at the opposite post to put the Knights up 1-0 at the 10:03 mark.

About 20 minutes later, Clarkson picked up its first insurance goal as a long ball was sent into the Nazareth defensive end. Chloe Hodge gained possession near midfield and popped up a long pass into the Golden Flyers' end. From there Emma Robinson battled a pair of Nazareth defenders and was able to get possession about 12 yards out, sending a grounder to the right far post at 29:26 for her first collegiate goal.

Clarkson found a little luck for its third goal early on in the second half. A shot was taken by a Clarkson player but one of the Nazareth defenders had an inadvertent handball, providing the Knights with a penalty kick. Lopol was called upon again, hitting a low grounder to the right side at 60:22.

The Knights finished with a 20-4 lead in shots and a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. Clarkson also had four corner kick chances to Nazareth's one. Molly DiCaprio made one save in the second half to pick up her second shutout of the year and Annika Monfort had six saves in the contest for Naz.
