Knights Split at RPI, 7-3 and 10-7

Troy, NY – Falling behind early in both games, the Clarkson University Baseball team rallied for a win in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader and nearly repeated the feat in the nightcap as the Golden Knights split with Rensselaer, winning game one 7-3 and dropping game two 10-7.

The Golden Knights moved to 9-15 overall and 7-5 in the Liberty League while the Engineers are now 19-10-1 and 6-4. Clarkson is scheduled for a key three-game divisional set against Ithaca College next weekend.

Game one saw RPI jump out to a 3-0 lead through the first three innings, scoring once in the first and two more times in the second. Aidan Hicks walked, stole second and advanced on another single before Julian Scarpa's fielder's choice forced Hicks home. Scarpa then produced a two-out, two-run double in the third to give the Engineers a 3-0 edge.

Clarkson picked up a run in the fourth, one in the fifth, and four more in the sixth to take the lead. Cam Jerrett drove in Joe Figliolino for Clarkson's first run, and a bases loaded walk by Colby Brouillette forced in Sean Eddington in the fifth. In the sixth, the Knights initially were playing for one as Jake Millich singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. However, a walk from Kent Wilson and a single by James Mason loaded the bases. Sean Eddington was then hit by a pitch to force in the tying run, and Caleb Doyle then grounded out to score the go-ahead run. Joe Pagano then provided some breathing room with a two-run double to right-center, making the score 6-3. Clarkson would tack on another run in the ninth as Millich doubled in pinch-runner Aidan Kuefner.

Hunter Geisler allowed just one hit and a walk over 3.2 innings for the win, and Derrick Lewis tossed the final 2.1 innings for a save. Pagano and Millich each went 3-for-5 in the contest, while Figliolino, Mason, and Jerrett each had two hits.

Julian Scarpa added to his three RBI in the first game with key offense in game two. He drove in two with a single in the first, singled in another run in the third, and cleared the bases with a three-run double in the fourth. Clarkson had picked up a run on a sac fly by Caleb Doyle in the third and two more on a home run by Robert Whalen, but through four frames, the Knights trailed 9-3.

Clarkson chipped away with a run in the fifth as Eddington doubled to left-center and moved up to third on a single from Doyle. Joe Pagano's ground out scored Eddington to make it 9-4, and in the top of the sixth, Eddington delivered a two-out, three-run shot to close the gap to 9-7. After an Aidan Safar infield single put the Engineers up 10-7, Clarkson had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh. The Knights loaded the bases with no one out, but a fly out to center and a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat and the game.

Eddington reached in three plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with an HBP, two runs scored and three RBI. Millich also went 2-for-3 in the game.
