Knights Drop Midweek Affair Against Cortland State, 8-6

Cortland, NY – Steadily chipping away at an early deficit, the Clarkson University Baseball team couldn't quite complete its come-back effort against Cortland State on Wednesday, as the Golden Knights fell to the Red Dragons 8-6 in a non-league game at Wallace Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-9 on the season with the defeat, while Cortland edged forward to 12-7. Clarkson is schedule for a three-game Liberty League series against RIT this weekend.

Clarkson put up two runs in the top of the first as Colby Brouillette tripled home Kent Wilson, who had reached on a fielder's choice, and then scored himself on a throwing error, but the Red Dragons scored four runs in both the second and third innings. Zachary Kringdon doubled in the first run for Cortland and Matthew Krafft sent two more in on a double down the right field line to put the Dragons up 3-2. A throwing error later allowed Krafft to score Cortland's fourth run of the frame.

In the third, Brouillette hit a sac fly to center to score Joe Pagano, who had led off the inning with a single, to draw the Knights back within one, but Cortland responded with four in the bottom half of the inning. A bases loaded hit by pitch put the score at 5-3, Dylan Tierney singled in a run, and Krafft singled to right-center to score two more.

While Clarkson's pitching staff kept the Red Dragons off the board for the next five innings, the Knights started to get back into the game. One run came around in the fifth on a Kent Wilson single, scoring Robert Whalen, and in the eighth Quinn Maslowski scored two with his single to center, putting the score at 8-6. However, the Knights would go quietly in the ninth as the Red Dragons held on for the win.

Both teams used numerous arms in the midweek contest, but Bryan Bernard picked up the win by throwing the first two innings for the Red Dragons, and Joseph Godomsky took the loss for the Knights, likewise tossing the first two frames. Clarkson used five pitchers overall, while Cortland had six pitchers.

Caleb Doyle, Kent Wilson, and Joe Pagano each had multi-hit games, and Brouillette drove in two. For Cortland, Matthew Krafft was one of four players with two hits, and he drove in four runs for the Red Dragons.
