Knights Down Emerson for First Win of 2023, Kane Claims 400th Career Victory

Auburndale, FL – Freshman CJ Cartier drove in Colby Brouillette in the bottom of the sixth to give the Clarkson University Baseball team a 3-2 advantage, and that run proved to be the game-winner as the Golden Knights downed Emerson College on Wednesday morning at Lake Myrtle Baseball complex.

The win was the Golden Knights' first of 2023, and the 400th of head coach Jim Kane's career. Emerson fell to 4-5 on the year.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard early, putting a run up in the bottom of the first. Caleb Doyle reached on an error and advanced to second on the play, and finished his way around the bases on groundouts from Aidan Kuefner and Jake Millich, with the latter receiving the RBI. Emerson picked up a run in the top of the second on a bases loaded hit by pitch, and then took the lead briefly in the top of the third when a Jake Hatch sacrifice fly plated Briggs Loveland, who led off the inning with a walk. The Knights got the run back in the bottom half of the frame as Cam Jerrett led off with a double and completed the circuit on a single by Caleb Doyle and a sac fly from Kuefner, tying the game 3-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, Brouillette led off with a double and came around on Cartier's single to put the Knights up 3-2. The Lions would challenge in the top of the eighth as Quinton Copeland led off the inning with a single, but he would be stranded at third and was the last true scoring threat in the game for Emerson.

Nicholas Hofacker picked up the win for the Knights in relief of Mateo Sarabia. The sophomore Sarabia went three innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits before Hofacker came in. From that point on, Hofacker shut down the Lions, allowing three hits and two walks over six scoreless frames while striking out eight. Colby Brouillette and Caleb Doyle each notched two hits in the contest, with Doyle also stealing two bases.
