Knights Battle Through Five Sets to Advance Over RIT in Liberty League First Round

Potsdam, NY – Getting points when they mattered most, the Clarkson University Volleyball team was able to survive a scare from RIT in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs, downing the Tigers in five sets 17-25, 26-24, 25-20, 20-25, 15-11 on Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights advance to the Liberty League Semifinals on Friday, where they will take on second-seeded William Smith College. Clarkson moved to 14-11 on the season with the win over RIT, while the Tigers saw their season end at 11-22.

RIT came out looking like it didn't want the tournament to be straight chalk through the seedings, scoring the first five points of the set and looking like the higher seed. Clarkson eventually trailed by as many as six in the early going before rallying back within three. Three straight points, however, returned the advantage to six, and a key switch of points on a ball that appeared to be out allowed RIT to maintain the momentum and cruise to the win in the opener.

The second set saw the Knights score nine of the first 14 points as Clarkson righted its offense. That proved to be the theme for the Green and Gold in sets two and three, as the Knights hit well over .300 in those sets. Despite the stronger version of a Clarkson offense, RIT would not go away, and eventually taking the lead late in the set, up by two (22-20). Multiple kills from the middle hitters of Natalie Peacock and Allyson Treichel allowed Clarkson to escape the second set with a 26-24 win.

RIT started strong in the third set, mirroring its start in the first game of the match. Clarkson took less time to recover, tying the match at 11-11, but RIT picked up four straight points shortly thereafter and led 17-13. The Knights responded with seven of the next eight and never trailed again, closing out the set with five of the final six points for a 25-20 victory.

Clarkson appeared prepared to finish things off in four with a strong start in the fourth set, but again the Tigers would not give in to the higher seed. The Knights led by four early on (9-5), only to see the Tigers score seven straight. Clarkson would take its time to come back, tying the set at 18-18 on a kill by Sara Galante, but that was where the momentum would halt, as RIT's offense began to assert itself thanks to two kills each from Emelia Mislan and Samantha Cox.

A solid start to the fifth had Clarkson ready to run away with the win, as the Knights picked up five straight to open and 11 of the first 14 points overall. With their backs against the wall, the Tigers still chipped away at the deficit, including a run of five straight that put considerable pressure on Clarkson's defense. However, the Knights ended things on consecutive kills from Marin Hangliter to advance in the conference playoffs.

Offensively, Sara Galante led the Knights with 16 kills, including four in the fifth set, while also adding a total of 12 digs. Marin Hangliter also produced 11 kills and 10 digs. Allyson Treichel recorded nine kills and both Natalie Peacock and Olivia Freer had six kills, but their biggest efforts came at the net, as Peacock had three block assists and Freer had seven total blocks, including two solo efforts. Isabelle Crow had a double-double on 21 assists and 10 digs, Anna Mayer nearly matched the effort with 20 assists and 10 digs, and Abigail Spector picked up 14 digs while also contributing 10 assists.

Four finished in double figures for kills on RIT's squad, led by Macie Jolliffe, who had 18 kills and 14 digs. Cat Vento (12-2-25) and Grace Phelan (12-1-25) each hit over .400, with Vento contributing five blocks and Phelan tossing in four aces. Emelia Mislan also had 12 kills on offense for the Tigers. Sydney Neff recorded 53 assists, Hailey Blixt had 28 digs, and Jenell Hall notched 14 digs and three aces.
