Knights Split on Day Two of Plattsburgh Tournament

Plattsburgh, NY – A long wait had the Clarkson University Volleyball team delayed in its start today two of the Plattsburgh Invitational, with the Golden Knights coming away with a split against Coast Guard Academy and Plattsburgh State on Saturday evening.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-1 and will host the first of their three scheduled tournaments next weekend, beginning on Friday with matches against Lasell and Middlebury.

In the first match of the day, the Golden Knights battled to five sets in a loss to the US Coast Guard Academy (25-21, 14-25, 25-17, 14-25, 14-16). The Knights trailed by three in the final set (14-11), but rallied to tie the game at 14. A 50-50 call on a cross-court kills by Noelle Tursky put Coast Guard, up the designated visitors closed out the set and match when the Knights had an error at the net on the following point.

Allyson Treichel posted 14 kills and four block assists to lead the Knights on offense and at the net, while Kristin Werdine chipped in 13 kills and 6 aces, as well as 17 digs. Isabelle Crow had her second straight double-double with 28 assists and 19 digs, tying for the team lead in the latter category with Emma Baxter. Abigail Spector also chipped in 12 digs and Tess Sorel had three aces from the service line.

For Coast Guard, Noelle Tursky filled up the stat sheet with 13 kills, 20 assists, 21 digs, 6 total blocks, and 5 aces. Carlee Lingle had eight kills in 15 attempts, Maeve Duffin produced 19 assists, and Carmen Zipf also had 21 digs and seven assists.  Up front Elizabeth Atkinson posted seven total blocks (three solo, four assists) and Allie Wildsmith had six blocks (one solo, five assists).

The second match saw the Golden Knights come away with a sweep of the host school, winning 25-12, 25-18, 25-21. Clarkson had a few hiccups in the third set, trailing by five through the first 15 points, but the Knights rallied with 11 of the next 13 scores to turn the game around for the three-set win.

The Knights' defense frustrated Plattsburgh, forcing the Cardinals to make nine errors in the first set and eight in the second, as Plattsburgh hit just -.059 through the opening two sets.

No player finished in double figures in kills, though Kristin Werdine was close with nine while also adding in four aces. Emma Main and Allyson Treichel also added six kills and Natalie Peacock produced five kills. Isabelle Crow had 21 assists while Ashley Currier had six assists and two kills. Emma Baxter led the team with 15 digs and also tossed in three aces.

For Plattsburgh, three players had five kills and Kyleigh Ganz posted 10 assists with Emma Rivers adding in nine assists. Maggie Lyon contributed 21 digs for the Cardinals.
