Clarkson Starts Liberty League Slate 3-0 After Sweep of St. Lawrence

Canton, NY – Trailing only on the opening point of the match, the Clarkson University Volleyball team remained unbeaten in Liberty League play as the Golden Knights swept St. Lawrence in three straight sets on Thursday evening, downing the Saints 25-9, 25-15, 25-14.

The Golden Knights edged their record forward to 6-7 overall and 3-0 in conference matches, while St. Lawrence fell to 5-10 and 1-2. Clarkson will play a pair of non-league matches this weekend when the team hosts John Jay College and SUNY Oneonta at Alumni Gymnasium.

Clarkson controlled the first set throughout, thanks to a 12-1 run that turned the set from just a 4-3 lead to a 16-4 advantage, with several of those points coming off Allyson Treichel's slides from the middle to the outside. Kristin Werdine also was dominant in the first set with six kills and just one error on eight swings. When the Saints began trading points late in the first set, Isabelle Crow took over from the service line, keeping St. Lawrence off-balance and unable to get the offense going, as the senior setter delivered four aces in a stretch of five points to put the game away.

As good as Clarkson's offense was in the first set (.409 hitting percentage), the Golden Knights were even better in set number two. Clarkson drilled down 16 kills against just three errors in 30 attempts, turning a small lead at the midway point of the set (14-10) into another double-digit win. Juniors Sara Galante and Olivia Freer were the standouts offensively, as the Knights began to use different looks for points.

The third set saw the Knights jump out to an early lead with the first four points and the Knights steadily edged out to a double-digit lead at 15-5 after an ace from freshman Ashley Currier. Clarkson expanded the lead to 12 a few points later, but the Saints found a bit of life to briefly get back within single digits. Consecutive kills from Kristin Werdine squashed the rally momentarily, as the Knights returned their advantage to 11, but the Saints came out of a timeout with five more points to put the margin at six (20-14), but the Knights responded with five straight points of their own to end the match, finishing things off on a block from Freer and Treichel.

Senior Kristin Werdine led the team with 12 kills, hitting .304 (12-5-23). Allyson Treichel (.545, 6-0-11), Sara Galante (.438, 8-1-16), and Olivia Freer (.357, 6-1-14) also posted high hitting percentages for the Knights. Isabelle Crow posted 31 assists and six aces in the win while also leading the team in digs with 12. Emma Baxter also tossed in nine digs and a pair of aces for the Knights. Clarkson hit .370 in the match (38-8-81), its highest hitting percentage of the year by nearly 100 points.

For St. Lawrence, Vivian Zymeck led the team with five kills while three others tied for second with four kills. Lily Snide delivered 14 assists and Julia Giroux had nine digs.
