Knights Off to Best Start Since 1990 After 1-0 Win Over St. John Fisher

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Zach Shufelt scored with less than five minutes remaining to help lift the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team to its sixth straight win to open 2022 as the Golden Knights downed St. John Fisher 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The 24th-ranked Golden Knights remained unbeaten, and unscored upon, for the season, the team's best start since 1990 at 6-0-0. The Cardinals fell to 2-3-1 on the year. Clarkson opens Liberty League play this weekend when the team travels to Ithaca College.

Opportunities for both teams were few and far between in the first half. St. John Fisher did have a chance in the early going after two forwards were able to get out in front, but Clarkson goalkeeper Josh Morelli came out to shut down the angle and make a save late in the seventh minute. The Knights' best chance came on a shot from about 15 yards out where Michael Lanfear hit the post at 13:16.

The second half saw Clarkson control the play for most of the 45 minutes, though St. John Fisher did put a few scares into the Knights near the midway point on some corner kicks. The best shots from the Cardinals, however, were too far out to beat the Clarkson defense.

The Knights had several chances before breaking through. Some hard groundballs were stopped by St. John Fisher goalkeeper Jadon Schlierf. Kyle Otis's header at 68:22 looked like it might have cross the goal line, but it deflected off the top of the crossbar and out, and at 81:25 Joey White's shot was denied by Schlierf.

Clarkson's goal came seemingly out of a drill, as the team gained possession near midfield and played the ball back, starting the offense with Nolan Grady near the center line. The players weaved in and out with tight passing as the ball went from Bobby Guilfoil to Kyle Otis, back to Nolan Grady, and back to Guilfoil, with the grad student sending a short pass to Tayte Wong. The freshman then kicked the ball back to the middle at about 10 yards out to classmate Zach Shufelt, and Shufelt was able to do a quick touch with his right foot to the opposite post in the 86th minute for a 1-0 lead.

Clarkson finished with a 15-3 edge in shots, and a 7-1 lead in shots on goal. The two teams were tied at 3-3 in corner kick chances. Morelli made just one save for the shutout, Clarkson's record-setting sixth consecutive whitewash, while Schlierf made six stops for the Cardinals.
