Knights Fall in Four to Stevens

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Allyson Treichel had a match-best 13 kills for the Clarkson University Volleyball team, but the Golden Knights came up short against Stevens in four sets, 25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 25-12, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 3-3, while Stevens ran its win streak to five straight to improve to 6-2. Clarkson heads to the Midwest next weekend when it takes on three top-20 teams in a four-match weekend at Hope College.

In the first set, the Knights won the first three points, but Stevens quickly rallied to take seven of the next eight and 17 of the next 21 for a double-digit lead (17-7). Clarkson crawled back into the contest with a solid 10-3 run, which included three straight aces from Kristin Werdine. The Knights were all the way back to within one at 23-22, but Stevens won the final two points to survive the first set.

The second set lacked the significant runs of the first game, though Clarkson came back from a five-point deficit to get within one after three straight kills from Allyson Treichel, Marin Hangliter, and Tess Sorel made it 14-13. Stevens responded with four straight points, though, to return the margin to five, and held on for a six-point win.

Clarkson trailed in the early going of set three, but two kills from Sorel and another from Sara Galante gave the Knights a 9-7 advantage, a lead which they would never relinquish. Clarkson led by five late, and closed out the set with a kill from Galante, block assists from Julia Bennett and Treichel, and a kill from Treichel for an eight-point margin.

The fourth set was close in the early going, but Stevens rattled off eight straight points at a key point of the game, turning a five-point lead into a 13-point advantage, which turned out to be the final margin.

Treichel posted 13 kills and also added four block assists to lead Clarkson, while Kristin Werdine produced nine kills, four aces, and 13 digs. Sara Galante had nine kills in only two sets with a .353 hitting percentage. Isabelle Crow had 44 assists and Emma Baxter led the defense with 18 digs.

For Stevens, Liz Patterson had a double-double on 12 kills and 14 digs, but it was Cleo Shannon and Elle Maggio who really churned the offense. Shannon hit .318 with nine kills and Maggio had eight kills for a .375 hitting percentage. Meg Dion also added five block assists.
