Knights Upend #12 Cortland, 11-10

Cortland, NY – After a couple of near misses in recent years, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team got over the hump on Saturday, beating 12th-ranked Cortland State for the first time in program history with an 11-10 victory over the Red Dragons.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-0 on the young campaign while Cortland remained winless at 0-2. Clarkson will travel down Route 11 to face SUNY Canton on Thursday and will then host Utica on Saturday before embarking on its spring trip.

Despite scoring the first goal of the game, Clarkson suffered through a slow start in the opening quarter, as Madelynn Barnum's goal at 8:23 was the only tally that the Knights earned in the first 15 minutes. Fortunately, Cortland wasn't any more robust on offense and scored only twice in the first period, including one in the final minute.

The second quarter was a little different for the Knights, as Barnum tallied at 13:36 to tie the game at 2-2. Although Cortland regained the lead briefly on a player-up goal, the Knights scored four straight midway through the second to take a three-goal lead, with Julia Lavarnway scoring twice and Sydney Roderick and Barnum adding goals.

Cortland recovered in the third quarter, coming back to tie the game thanks to a pair of player-up goals late in the period, with Hannah Keech scoring at 5:29 and Hannah Lorenzen tallying while the Knights were down a player at 2:10. The Red Dragons scored an early goal in the fourth quarter to take the lead 9-8, but Clarkson scored three goals in a stretch of just over two minutes midway through the period. Grace Hagberg found Lavarnway at 9:16 to tie the game at 9-9, and an unassisted marker from Sydney Roderick at 8:56 put Clarkson up by one. With the Knights up a player after a penalty, Roderick then found Mia Petrone in front at 7:05 for an insurance goal. It proved to be a key score as Cortland picked up one more goal with just under four minutes to go, but the ultimate play may have come in the final minute when Sydney Roderick caused a turnover in the waning seconds to keep Cortland from attempting what could have proved to be a game-tying shot.

Roderick scored five points on two goals and three assists while also chipping in three groundballs and two caused turnovers for the Knights. Julia Lavarnway added four points on three goals and an assist, while Madelynn Barnum was busy scoring four goals and adding eight draws and four groundballs. Sydney Christiansen earned the win in the Clarkson crease, stopping 13 shots.

For Cortland, both Hannah Lorenzen and Toni Cashman were busy taking shots, as each attempted 13 overall. Lorenzen scored six points on four goals and two assists and Cashman added two goals and an assist for three points. Lorenzen also won seven draws. Amy Hoeffner added two points with a goal and an assist, but also caused three turnovers and snagged five groundballs. Paige Potter made eight saves for the Red Dragons.
