Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bell Notches Double-Double in Loss at RPI

Troy, NY – Senior Lauren Bell recorded her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds, but the effort was not enough for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights fell to Rensselaer 60-50 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon.

The Green and Gold dropped to 5-16 on the season and 4-11 in conference games while RPI moved to 5-16 and 4-12. For Clarkson to make the conference tournament, the Knights would have to win their final three games and hope for help from all three of RIT's opponents, which include Ithaca, Rensselaer, and Bard.

Clarkson got off to a solid start and led by four after a Lauren Bell free throw at the 4:09 mark of the first, but the Knights couldn't build on that momentum as they were held scoreless for the remainder of the quarter. RPI did not take much advantage of that cold streak from the Knights, only scoring two points over the final four minutes of the quarter as well.

Both teams found a little more offense in the second quarter. Clarkson again edged out by as many as four when Ruthie Nolan hit a layup at the 7:56 mark, but RPI went on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to take a five-point lead. Down the stretch, Clarkson was able to tie the contest, as Cassidy Dumont converted inside twice, including a buzzer beater to knot the game at 25-25 at the break.

Clarkson remained close in the third and the game was still tied when Mariah Benavides hit a 3-pointer at 4:27, but long-range makes from Ahnalese Pearson and Nicole DaPra gave the Engineers a seven-point advantage at the end of the third period. RPI built on that run at the start of the fourth as Clarkson struggled to convert on its end. Heather Converse scored on a layup at the 7:56 mark to put the Engineers up by 13 as Clarkson couldn't keep pace with only makes on free throws. Cassidy Dumont hit a jumper at the 5:47 mark of the fourth, Clarkson's first made field goal of the period, and that momentarily sparked the Knights, but the double-digit deficit was too much to overcome.

The difference in the game came in the third quarter as Clarkson shot only 5-for-14 from the floor and the Engineers were 10-for-15 from the field.

Bell was 5-for-11 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free throw line for her team-high 15 points while Cassidy Dumont chipped in 10 points on 5-for-12 shooting. Bell also had eight offensive rebounds among her 13 boards.

For the Engineers, Heather Converse had a double-double of her own thanks to 11 points and 12 rebounds. Nicole DaPra and Lolo Reynolds each scored 13 points while Ashlyn O'Neil scored 10 points for RPI.
