Knights Come Up Short in Season-Opener at Plattsburgh, 61-59

Plattsburgh, NY – A last second shot missed its mark as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team came up just short in a 61-59 defeat in the Golden Knights' season-opener against Plattsburgh State on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights have a week to regroup, as Clarkson will head down Route 11 to take on North Country foe SUNY Canton on Tuesday, November 15th.

Clarkson found itself trailing from the outset, but the game never got away from the Knights as the teams remained close throughout. In the first period, Katy Peterson-Ross hit a layup at the 2:27 mark to give the Cardinals an eight-point advantage, but by the start of the second quarter, a 3-pointer by frosh Raelin Burns cut the margin back to one and a little over a minute later, another 3-pointer from senior Mariah Benavides tied the game at 17-17. Plattsburgh responded with a 9-1 run over the next two and a half minutes capped by a Payton Couture jumper at 5:48, and the two teams remained separated by a similar margin of six points at the break.

At the mid-point of the third quarter, Cassidy Dumont hit a layup to tie the game at 34-34, but the Cardinals would not allow Clarkson to take the advantage, building a five-point lead on four separate occasions in the quarter. In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter it appeared that the Cardinals might run away with the game, taking their largest lead of the game at 6:30 when Bri Brosseau converted inside to make the score 58-49. However, Clarkson's defense clamped down and created turnovers while the Knights' offense chipped away at the deficit. Lauryn Withrow scored on a short shot at the midway point of the fourth, and a Raelin Burns 3-pointer at 3:38 put the margin at four. Elaina Porter hit a layup and Veronica Tache hit a free throw to trim the gap to just one with a little over a minute remaining.

In the final minute, Clarkson picked up its first lead of the game when Cassidy Dumont hit a jumper with 36 seconds remaining, and it looked like the momentum was clearly on the Green and Gold's side. However, Kortney McCarthy hit a short jumper just 14 seconds later to put the Cardinals back on top. Clarkson came up empty on its next possession and after a few fouls and a free throw gave Plattsburgh a two-point lead, the Knights had one last chance, only to see the final shot come up short.

Cassidy Dumont finished with a team-best 13 points in the game, while Lauryn Withrow, and Raelin Burns each tossed in 11. Withrow also added four assists and Burns made three 3-point field goals. Bella Doyle was two points shy of a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds, and Elaina Porter filled the stat sheet with 8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.

For Plattsburgh, Brosseau contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 8-for-13 from the floor. Couture scored 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting, and Mya Smith had 12 points and four assists.
