CU Volleyball Advances to Liberty League Championship with Sweep of Union

Ithaca, NY – Outside hitters Sara Galante and Kristin Werdine combined for 25 kills as the Clarkson University Volleyball team advanced to its 11th straight conference championship match, downing Union College in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20, in the Liberty League Semifinals Friday afternoon at Ithaca College.

The Golden Knights improved to 16-10 on the season, while the Dutchwomen saw their season end at 13-14. Second-seeded Clarkson faces top-seeded Ithaca College for the conference championship at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

The two teams were fairly even in the early going, until a 3-0 stretch, which included kills from Natalie Peacock and Kristin Werdine as well as a block from Olivia Freer, gave Clarkson some breathing room at 10-6. Union cut the margin to two a few points later, only to see the Knights score six straight to take a 17-9 lead. Clarkson held a nine-point lead late in the match, only to see the Dutchwomen chip away and get back within five, but the Green and Gold were never truly challenged in the set after their big run.

Clarkson used the momentum from the first set to rush out to a 5-0 lead in the second game, and eventually led by a score of 9-2 before Union began to correct its offense. Three straight points, with kills from Julia Webster and Denesha Lafontant got Union within two (16-14), but the Knights responded with five straight points, taking advantage of several miscues by the Dutchwomen and two kills from Sara Galante to make the score 21-14. The two teams essentially traded points until the very end of the game, when Olivia Freer's kill put the set away.

The Dutchwomen had hopes of sending the contest to additional sets, jumping out to a 7-4 lead in the early going of the third game, but Clarkson rallied near the midway point and took the lead 12-11 with a 4-0 run, edging out ahead on a kill from Natalie Peacock. Union tied the set on the next point, but that would be the last time that the Dutchwomen would be even with Clarkson. The Knights won five of six points late in the set, turning a one-point margin into a five-point lead, capped by an ace from Ashley Currier. Again, the two teams would trade points, but Clarkson's healthy advantage was enough to cruise to the sweep.

Junior Sara Galante hit .294 in the match with 13 kills, her second-best figure of 2022, while Kristin Werdine added 12 kills and 12 digs. Emma Baxter delivered 16 digs and five assists, and Isabelle Crow recorded 29 assists. Olivia Freer also had six kills and six blocks.

For Union, Shannon McGrath had 14 kills, but was also forced into eight errors, to lead the Dutchwomen's offense. Julia Webster hit .500 (10-2-16) and Nikki Newcomer also contributed nine kills. Brooke Fleming had 17 assists, Haley Kresch posted 15 assists, and Georgia Poole notched 10 digs.
