Knights Extend Winning Streak to Six with Sweep of William Smith

Potsdam, NY – In a matchup between two teams on five-game winning streaks, the Clarkson University Volleyball team extended its run to six as the Golden Knights swept William Smith College 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 in Liberty League action Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved up to 9-7 overall and remained unbeaten in league contests at 4-0, while Herons dropped to 8-4 and 1-1. Clarkson begins the second half of the conference slate tomorrow when the team hosts RIT at 2:00 pm.

In the opening set, Clarkson ran off with the first four points, but William Smith took the lead with six straight thanks to some strong serving by Kenyce Johnson. However, the Knights took the lead for good with a six-point run of their own, which included a pair of aces from Emma Baxter. Though William Smith got back within one on two occasions, the Knights were able to stop the Herons offensive rush and build a six-point advantage late (20-14). With the Herons within three late, Clarkson ended the set on a kill from Kristin Werdine and an ace from Isabelle Crow.

The second set saw some unorthodox offense by both teams as the defenses scrambled to create some strange attacks by the hitters, but the style worked for each team at moments. Sara Galante had a stretch of three kills in the second set just a few points apart, with one getting pushed to the opposite side, another getting tapped over the block, and a third hit hard in the center of the court. That turned a two-point lead into a five-point advantage for the Knights. Clarkson closed out the game with four straight points, with the last three coming via an ace from Crow, a solo block by Werdine, and a kill from Olivia Freer.

In the third set, the Knights jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The first four points went Clarkson's way, then the Green and Gold doubled up the Herons at 6-3, 8-4, 12-6, and later 16-8. From that point on, the two teams essentially traded points and the Knights cruised to the six-point win.

Kristin Werdine continued her strong run on offense with a .409 hitting percentage and team-bests of 10 kills and 11 digs. Olivia Freer (.467) and Sara Galante (.412) joined Werdine with plus-.400 percentages as each had nine kills. Isabelle Crow added 34 assists and a pair of aces, and Emma Baxter contributed nine digs and two aces. Overall, Clarkson hit .337 in the match, including a .500 clip (16-1-30) in the final set.

For William Smith, Elizabeth Telapova had 11 kills, while Malya Sayre and Hope Von Dohlen each added nine kills. Emma Wamhoff contributed 30 assists, and Sayre led the defense with eight digs.
