Knights Drop Pair in Tri-Match at Cortland

Cortland, NY – A day after winning its six league match of the season without a loss, the Clarkson University Volleyball team saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end as the Golden Knights fell to SUNY Cortland in three sets (25-17, 25-16, 26-24) and then fell in five to Williams College (25-21, 25-16, 20-25, 23-25, 15-11) in a tri-match held on the campus of Cortland.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 11-9 overall while Cortland moved to 14-4 and Williams improved to 9-5. Clarkson will be home for the remainder of the regular season, including three matches next weekend when the team takes on Skidmore College, Bates College, and SUNY Potsdam.

Cortland's middles proved too much for the Knights in the first match as the Red Dragons had 12 blocks in the first match of the day. Clarkson hit negative in the first set and was at .114 in the second set before righting the ship in the third set with 19 kills. Even that effort came with nine attack errors, and Cortland was efficient on offense (13-2-42, .262) to win the set in extra points.

Sara Galante and Kristin Werdine each had 10 kills in the first match of the day, with Werdine also chipping in 12 digs. Allyson Treichel added seven kills and Isabelle Crow had 31 assists. For Cortland, Emma Reilly had seven total blocks, including four solo efforts, and Danielle Fisk had three solo blocks. Allie Sturgess also posted 12 kills and nine digs, and Meadow Wittman had 14 digs for the Red Dragons.

In the second match of the day for the Knights, Clarkson dropped the first two sets, again struggling in the opener by hitting only .029. The Ephs were efficient in the second set (.371, 16-3-35) to take a 2-0 lead, but Clarkson rallied with strong efforts in the third and fourth sets to push the match to five. Williams jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fifth game, with the last three coming on Clarkson attack errors. Sara Galante then scored three straight kills to get the Knights back within three, but that would be as close as the Knights would get as the Ephs were able to keep maintain that margin four more times before closing the game out 15-11.

Treichel had 15 kills and three aces in the second match of the day, while Galante tossed in 12 kills and eight digs. Werdine also had nine kills and three aces to go along with her 18 digs on the defensive side. Emma Baxter led the team with 20 digs and Natalie Peacock chipped in six kills and three blocks (two solo). Isabelle Crow also had 39 assists and 16 digs.

For Williams, Marin Hoyem posted 13 kills and eight total blocks (four solo, four block assists). Celia Adams hit well with 11 kills against just one error in 37 swings, and Christina Conforti had a double-double on 10 kills and 15 digs. Lauren Kauppila recorded 34 assists and three aces, and Sidra Wohlwend had 24 digs.
