Strong Fourth Quarter Sends Vassar Past Clarkson, 58-53

Poughkeepsie, NY – After a slow start, Vassar College scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to snatch a 58-53 win from the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in conference games while Vassar evened its mark at 5-5 while remaining unbeaten in league games at 4-0.

Clarkson held a 14-point lead in the early portion of the fourth quarter, but Vassar finally found its stroke from the perimeter, making six of nine attempts from beyond the 3-point line.

The Golden Knights took advantage of Vassar's slow start offensively, rolling out to a seven-point lead after a 3-pointer from Ruthie Nolan near the midway point of the first quarter. Clarkson was able to keep Vassar from getting comfortable by limiting the Brewers' second-chance opportunities, as Vassar had zero offensive rebounds in the first quarter and only three in the opening half. After the first break, the Brewers showed some signs of life with two makes in the first 30 seconds of the second quarter, but the Knights responded with a 3-pointer from Nolan and a Cassidy Dumont layup to build their lead to nine points. Late in the quarter, Clarkson extended its advantage to 11, with that margin sticking at intermission.

Clarkson shot 10-for-28 from the floor in the first half (35.7%) while the Brewers struggled mightily, making just five shots on 38 attempts and missing all 18 of their 3-pointers. The Knights also dominated on the glass, holding a 35-18 edge in rebounds.

Near the midway point of the third quarter, Cassidy Dumont and Mariah Benavides hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Knights up by 17 (37-20). However, Vassar was finally able to get its offense going by making some long-range shots to keep the Clarkson from running away with the game. Late in the period, the Brewers were able to pull within 12 when as Tova Gelb completed a three-point play with a layup and free throw with 27 seconds left on the clock.

The Knights pushed their advantage to 14 at the start of the fourth, but Vassar scored on three straight possessions, capping off a quick 7-0 run on a 3-pointer from Eliza Srinivasan at the 8:08 mark and dropping the margin to just seven. After a quick timeout, Alex Lee dropped in another 3-pointer for the Brewers and was quickly followed by another long-range shot from Dani Douglas to make it a one-point contest.

Clarkson was able to break the 13-0 run on a sideline jumper from Mariah Benavides, and the Knights pushed their lead back to six when Ruthie Nolan buried a 3-pointer off a broken play with the shot clock running down at the 5:09 mark. Two possessions later the game was tied for the first time since 2-2 as Gelb and Srinivasan hit consecutive 3-pointers, but a Mariah Benavides lay in put the Knights back up by two with just over three minutes remaining.

The Knights struggled on offense with increased pressure from the Brewers down the stretch and committed three turnovers after the jumper from Benavides, and Vassar took advantage. The Brewers pulled within one on a free throw and with 56 seconds remaining Dani Douglas hit a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Brewers the lead. Two more free throws and a layup off a turnover in the backcourt allowed the Brewers to claim the come-from-behind win.

Lauren Bell finished with a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 7-for-8 from the floor. Both Cassidy Dumont and Ruthie Nolan added 11 points, with Nolan also contributing 10 rebounds and four assists.

For Vassar, Gelb ended with 17 points, shooting 7-for-9 from the floor, Douglas had 13 points, and Srinivasan scored 11 points and also tossed in nine boards and four assists.
