Knights Win Fifth Straight in Four Sets Over Stevens

Hoboken, NJ – After two relatively easy wins in the opening two sets, the Clarkson University Volleyball team had to battle in the next two, but the Golden Knights walked away with a 3-1 win (25-12, 25-19, 19-25, 25-23) victory over Stevens Institute of Technology Friday night.

With the win, Clarkson improves to 7-3 on the season and has now claimed victory in five straight matches. The Knights will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Scranton and Stockton.

In the first set, Clarkson turned a small advantage (6-5) into a larger one with a 9-1 run, capped off by an ace from Cel Barrera-Lopez. The Knights led by at least eight points for the remainder of the set, more than doubling up the Ducks as Clarkson took advantage of 11 hitting errors from the home team.

Game two saw Sara Galante carry the Knights during a pair of stretches. Down by two early, Clarkson rattled off six straight thanks to three kills from Galante, and down by two midway through the set (13-11), Galante again knocked down three kills over an eight-point stretch. Clarkson led by six late (22-16) only to see Stevens trim the margin to three. However, two errors and an ace by Gillian Kurtic gave Clarkson the final three tallies of the set for a 2-0 lead.

Stevens reduced its errors considerably in the third set and started to find more of a groove on offense, scoring 12 kills in its first 17 points. The Ducks led by a just one (16-15), but a kill from Elle Maggio, ace, attack error, and kill from Liz Patterson put Stevens up by five, forcing the Knights to take a timeout. Clarkson scored coming out of the break, but Stevens kept the Knights at a safe distance the rest of the way to force a fourth set.

The fourth set saw the momentum shift hard twice where it appeared as if one team would roll to the victory. After an evenly played first 18 points, Clarkson went on a small run that saw the Knights edge out to a 16-11 advantage. However, the home Ducks then claimed nine of the next 11 points for a two-point lead ant it looked like a fifth set may be necessary to decide a winner. Two quick points on a kill and ace from Gillian Kurtic tied the set, and Olivia Freer picked up two kills and a block assist down the stretch to let the Knights edge out Stevens, 25-23, to gain the win.

Sophomore Sara Galante recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs while also contributing three aces. Classmate Olivia Freer hit .615 thanks to eight kills on just 13 swings, and grad student Gillian Kurtic notched six kills and three aces. Junior Isabelle Crow also had a double-double with 28 assists and 12 digs and junior Emma Baxter led the team on defense with 17 digs.

For Stevens, Elle Maggio and Liz Patterson each notched nine kills to headline the offense, while Kathleen Riegner picked up 25 assists. Elizabeth Chu was busy on defense with 20 digs and also contributed to the offense with four aces.
