Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Clarkson Falls 2-1 to Cortland

Potsdam, NY – A goal midway through the second half by the visitors proved to be the difference as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Cortland State on Friday evening at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall below .500 for the first time in 2021, as the Green and Gold fell to 2-3 on the year. Cortland improved to 2-3-1.

The game was fairly even through the first half with Cortland holding a small edge in possession, but it was Clarkson that would strike first near the middle of the opening 45. Freshman Alexis Billings stole the ball near midfield and carried it forward about 10 yards before sending the ball down the left sideline to Sarah Kohls. There, the junior captain waited for the rest of the Knights to fill the penalty area and sent a cross through traffic. Initially the ball was deflected by a Cortland defender, but it was settled off the chest by Chloe Hodge, who then sent her shot to the opposite corner to put the Knights up 1-0 at 20:55.

Cortland had a few chances near the end of the half, and finally found pay dirt at 40:02. Much like Clarkson's goal, Cortland began with possession near midfield as Erica Gangemi outmaneuvered a Clarkson midfielder for the ball and carried it forward roughly 10-15 yards. As defenders closed in, Gangemi sent a ball through space to Jaden Galluzzo, who was able to make space and chipped a shot past Molly DiCaprio from the top corner of the six to the far right post.

Scoring chances were limited for the first 15 minutes of the second half, but the Red Dragons broke through with a go-ahead goal in the 71st minute. Cortland began with a throw in two-thirds of the way up in its own defensive zone, finding Simone Neivel in the Clarkson defensive end. Neivel sent a long pass to a streaking Lizzy Sabatelle, and Sabatelle was able to knock in a shot from the top of the six on the far right at 70:41.

Cortland finished with a 14-5 edge in shots and a 9-3 lead in shots on goal, while Clarkson held the advantage on corners, 3-2. Molly DiCaprio made seven saves for the Knights and Katrina Klammer denied two shots for Cortland.
