Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early Goal Sends Clarkson to 2-0 Loss at RPI

Troy, NY – A goal in the first minute put the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team on its heels and the Golden Knights never recovered, dropping a 2-0 decision to Rensselaer in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights were eliminated from postseason contention just a few moments after kickoff with a win by Skidmore, and the team finished off the season at 5-9-2 overall and 2-5-2 in the Liberty League. The Engineers went out on a winning note, closing out their campaign at 5-6-4 and 2-5-2 in conference games.

Less than a minute into Saturday's contest, the Engineers found themselves up on a fairly unassuming goal. Whitney Wisnom stole a pass in the midfield and made a quick turn up field where she found teammate Brooke Miller at the top of the penalty area. After a step inside, the play was broken up by a Clarkson defender, but the ball ended up back on the foot of Wisnom and she took a hard shot on the ground that made its way through traffic and past the outstretched dive of Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio.

After that first score, the possession leaned in Clarkson's favor as the Knights held the Engineers to just one more shot for the remainder of the half, but took seven of their own attempts. Most of the attempts were wide of the frame, though Chloe Hodge's hard shot from 20-plus yards out challenged RPI keeper Megan Wampner in the 17th minute.

The second half saw the Engineers enjoy better scoring chances, and one of those ended up in the back of the net. Brooke Miller took a shot from just outside the box that had DiCaprio diving to her left to make the stop. DiCaprio was able to deny the attempt, but she was unable to hold on to the ball and Helen Worden took advantage of the opportunity in front of her, calmly tapping the ball over DiCaprio at 58:13.

Clarkson won the battle of shots 11-10, though RPI held the lead in shots on goal at 7-5. Clarkson also had a significant advantage in corner kick chances at 8-3. DiCaprio stopped five shots for the Knights, and Megan Wampner made four saves for the Engineers.
