Clarkson Falls in Season-Opener Against Hamilton 12-2

Clinton, NY – Leaving 10 runners on base, the Clarkson University Baseball team was unable to get the timely hitting it needed in a 12-2 loss to Hamilton College in the team's season opener Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights (0-1) will look to get in the win column tomorrow afternoon when they take on the Continentals in a two-game Sunday matinee starting at noon.

Clarkson threatened to score right from the start in the top half of the first inning. Mike Mieczkowski got things going with a two-out single and back-to-back walks from Mike Nee and Sean Gill loaded the bases for the Golden Knights. Hamilton would get out of trouble forcing a groundball to the shortstop ending the threat.

Hamilton followed with a threat of its own in the bottom half of the first, as a pair of two-out singles put runners in scoring position, but Clarkson starter Nate Burns wiggled out of the jam with a strikeout to close out the inning.

Clarkson again had a chance to score in the second, loading the bases once again, this time without registering an out. However, Continentals starting pitcher Gavin Schaefer-Hood bailed himself out of another bases loaded jam by sitting down the top three players of the Clarkson order to end the top half of the inning.

After two more scoreless innings, Hamilton broke the game open in the fourth as Burns lost a bit of the control in the bottom of the fourth, walking three batters in the frame. Hamilton got on the board first on an RBI double from Phil Bernstein and two more came across on a double by Graham McOsker. However, the big swing of the inning came on what appeared to be an inning ending fly out. The wind picked up at the right time, carrying Matt Zaffino's drive over the fence for a grand slam.

Freshman Grady Cram came on in relief in the fifth as Hamilton tacked on two more runs in both that inning and in the sixth for an 11-0 edge, and Jake Phillips allowed a run in the seventh.
Clarkson finally got on the board with a two-run double in the ninth inning. Freshman Sean Eddington started the final frame with a walk and was pushed to second after Caleb Doyle was hit by a pitch while pinch hitting for Ernesto Ruiz Sierra. Kyle Locklear sent both runners home by drilling a double to deep left field.

Nate Burns was solid for the first three frames before control and bad luck knocked him around for seven runs, though he did strike out six in four innings of work. Gavin Schaefer-Hood earned the win for Hamilton by tossing five shutout innings. Junior Mike Mieczkowski was 2-for-3 on the day with a walk while Kyle Locklear was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in and a walk.
