Clarkson Closes 2019-20 With 62-55 Win Over Union

Potsdam, NY – A strong start to the fourth quarter allowed the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to string together free throws down the stretch, and the Golden Knights 14-for-16 effort from the line in the final 10 minutes was the difference in a 62-55 victory over Union College Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights closed out the season at 8-16 overall and 4-14 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen ended their season at 10-14 overall and 7-11 in conference games.

Union opened the game with a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but the Golden Knights regrouped with a 30-second timeout and ended the quarter on a 15-0 run, including 3-pointers from Rachel Marion and Elaina Porter. The second period started the same as the first, as Clarkson was quiet on offense and the Dutchwomen scored eight straight points to tie the game, capping the run on a 3-pointer from Amber Raisner at 6:25. However, the second quarter also ended the same as the opener, as Clarkson once again took a timeout and ended the half on a 9-2 run. This time the spurt came mostly via the free throw line, as Rachel Marion hit three and Hannah Earl made a pair in that stretch.

Clarkson shot 7-for-13 in the first quarter but was only 2-for-13 in the second period as Union's defense clamped down. Union shot 32.0% in the first half, going 8-for-25 from the floor. Raisner nearly produced a double-double in the first half for the Dutchwomen, scoring 10 points to go along with seven rebounds.

The Green and Gold expanded their lead to nine points twice in the third quarter, but the final five minutes of the period saw Union draw to within one, including a late 3-pointer by Corina Lindsay, making the score 40-39. The Golden Knights would never relinquish the lead, however, getting a fast break layup from Emma Buonanno and a 3-pointer from Mariah Benavides to push the margin back to eight. Another jumper from Buonanno gave Clarkson its first double-digit advantage, and the margin would jostle back and forth between single figures and double digits for the next few minutes. Eventually, Clarkson was able to get to the free throw line as Union was forced to foul, and the Knights took advantage. A late basket from Amber Raisner and a last second 3-pointer by Corinda Lindsay put the margin at seven, but Clarkson's effort from the line was ample.

Benavides finished with 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting, while Hannah Earl added 12 points on 8-for-8 shooting from the free throw line. Emma Buonanno added 13 points and seven rebounds, going 6-for-9 from the floor. Rachel Marion also chipped in nine points, six boards and three steals.

For Union, Raisner scored 22 points and snagged 11 rebounds while both Elly Vaughan (11 points) and Corina Lindsay (10 points) finished in double figures.
