Benavides Career-High 21 Gives Knights Win Over Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – Hitting just enough free throws down the stretch to keep the visitors at small distance, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team picked up a 67-61 victory over Skidmore College on Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the Liberty League while Skidmore dropped to 2-11 and 0-6 in conference games. Clarkson faces Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon with a 12:00 noon start, while the Thoroughbreds travel to take on St. Lawrence.

Up by just three at the break, Clarkson scored 23 points in the third quarter to take a double-digit lead. Skidmore went to the basket with frequency in the fourth quarter and chipped away at the margin, but never got closer than three for the rest of the game as the Knights six free throws in the waning moments for the win.

Skidmore jumped out to a 10-2 lead as the Knights struggled to control the ball on the offensive end, committing five turnovers in the first five-plus minutes of the opening quarter. Eventually, Clarkson righted itself and closed the quarter out on a 10-0 run thanks to 3-pointers from Hannah Earl and Mariah Benavides.

Skidmore briefly regained the lead in the second quarter, but another Earl 3-pointer near the midway point put the Knights up by one. Clarkson would extend its advantage to as many as seven points in second quarter when sophomore Maddie Pratt hit a 3-pointer from the wing, but Skidmore closed out the half with a layup from Jessica Centore and a baseline jumper by Maddie Hastings to put the gap at three points at the break.

Skidmore shot 41.7% in the first half compared to Clarkson's 32.0%, but the Knights held a 19-11 edge on the glass.

At the start of the third quarter, the Knights immediately extended their lead to double figures. A run of three straight baskets by Maddie Pratt put Clarkson on a run and two free throws from Emma Buonanno gave the Knights a 16-point lead (49-33). Two free throws from Kate McCarney and a late basket from Jessica Centore pulled Skidmore back to within 12 through 30 minutes.

Skidmore aggressively went to the basket at the start of the fourth quarter and slipped back to within single digits very quickly. However, Clarkson always seemed to have an answer to keep Skidmore down by multiple possessions. A key play late was a three-point play by Mariah Benavides as she dribbled around the defense and made a late charge to the basket with the shot clock dropping. She converted the layup and made the free throw to put the Knights up 62-54. Although Skidmore drew back to within three points late (64-61), Benavides, Pratt and Rachel Marion each hit one free throw to give the Knights extra cushion.

Benavides finished with a collegiate-high 21 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the floor and 6-for-9 from the free throw line. Hannah Earl added 14 points and Maddie Pratt scored 14 in just 18 minutes of play.

For Skidmore, Jessica Centore tossed in 21 points while both Clare Driscoll and Kate McCarney scored 11 points.
