Knights Fall 2-1 to RIT, Ending Home Winning Streak

Potsdam, NY – Two goals just five minutes apart midway through the first half proved too much to overcome, as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to RIT on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 7-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Liberty League, their first loss at home of the season, while the Tigers improved to 5-3-0 and 1-1-0. Clarkson will head back on the road next Saturday to take on Liberty League foe William Smith.

Clarkson was able to get pressure on RIT early in the game, outshooting its opponent 4-2 in the opening 21 minutes of action, but none of those shots could break through the Tigers' defense. RIT would weather the storm and scored two goals in just a five-minute span. Abbey Saia put RIT on the board at the 28:20 mark off an assist from Christine Cataldo-Smith, and Cataldo-Smith would then put the Tigers up 2-0 at 33:23, finishing off a through ball from Mia White.

Clarkson responded with a goal of its own only 42 seconds after the Tigers' second score. Clarkson moved the ball quickly into the Tigers end following the kickoff and put pressure on the RIT defenders in hopes of forcing a turnover. An errant kick ended up on the foot of Megan Murphy about 30 yards away from the goal, and the senior sent a pass up to Giulia Mahoney near the top of the penalty area. Mahoney settled the ball and quickly turned to hit a rocket into the top portion of the goal past the Tigers' Alyssa Salls to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Clarkson struggled to find opportunities to put shots on goal during the second half, generating just one shot. Meanwhile RIT used its speed to pick up six more shots in the second half, forcing Clarkson on the defensive for most of the second half. The effort resulted in one more goal for the Tigers, as Christine Cataldo-Smith tapped in her second goal of the game in the 86th minute off a perfect pass from Courtney McHale.

Clarkson finished the game trailing in shots (12-8) and shots on goal (6-3). RIT also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks on the day. Elyse Green finished the day with three saves while Alyssa Salls stopped two shots.
