Knights Claim 3-0 Win Over Skidmore to Open Conference Slate

Potsdam, NY –Freshman Madelyn Van Aken scored the first two goals of her career in the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team's 3-0 win over Skidmore College to open Liberty League play on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson moved to 6-1-1 with the win, remaining unbeaten at home with a 6-0-0 mark, and move to 1-0-0 in Liberty League play. Skidmore, which entered the contest undefeated, are now 4-1-1 and are 0-1-0 in conference. The Golden Knights defeated the Thoroughbreds for just the second time in the series , with the previous win coming in 2003.

The beginning of the game saw both teams jockeying for possession with neither team generating much offense. The first shot of the game came from Giulia Mahoney at the 8:45 mark, and the attempt eventually found the back of the net, just not off her foot. Mahoney launched the ball onto the open goal but was stopped by a Skidmore defender, but the deflection landed onto the right foot of Madelyn Van Aken, who buried her first collegiate goal on the empty net. The Golden Knights led the first half in shots (5-4), and corner kicks (6-1).

Clarkson would pick up an insurance goal midway through the second half off the foot of Danielle Martin. Giulia Mahoney received a throw in deep in Thoroughbred territory and drove the ball towards the end line. She then centered a pass into the box, which was picked up by Danielle Martin. The senior settled the pass and put it past the outstretched arms of Skidmore's Vivian Montgomery-Walsh to give Clarkson a 2-0 edge. In the 73rd minute, the Knights picked up an additional insurance score as a throw in landed near the Skidmore box, beginning a scramble in front of the Thoroughbred goalkeeper. The ball popped out of the fray and onto the awaiting foot of Madelyn Van Aken, who was camped out on the right side of the box, where she calmly beat Montgomery-Walsh to give the Knights some extra breathing room.

Senior Elyse Green finished the game with four saves to secure her third shutout of the year. Ava Keller ended up with two saves in her 45 minutes of action and Vivian Mongomery-Walsh stopped three shots in the second half for Skidmore. Clarkson finished with a 16-9 edge in shots (9-4 on goal), and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
