Knights On Both Sides of One-Run Games in Split with RPI

Potsdam, NY – A one-run loss and a one-run win gave the Clarkson University Baseball team a split on Sunday as the Golden Knights dropped the opener against Rensselaer, 2-1, but rebounded in the nightcap, 6-5, at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 17-13 overall and 11-5 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers saw their record go to 15-15 and 11-7 in league games. The two teams will meet up for a second doubleheader on Monday afternoon.

Runs were at a premium as Ryan Yerby and Ryan Riley locked up in a pitchers' duel in the opener, though it didn't appear as if that would be the case early as both hurlers were nicked for runs. In the bottom of the first, Michael Tito led off with a double to left center and Pearson singled to right to put runners on the corners. Vincent Granuzzo walked to load the bases and Mike Nee followed with an RBI-single to right to give Clarkson a 1-0 advantage.

Rensselaer tied the game up in the second when Richard Drum singled through the left side and then stole second. Jack Moncur delivered a two-out single to right to plate Drum to tie the game at 1-1. In the top of the third, the Engineers picked up what would prove to be the winning run as Austin Lawrence singled to center and then came home on a Joseph Curci double to the left-center gap, making it 2-1.

Clarkson had a chance in the seventh with runners on first and second and just one out, but Yerby escaped the jam with a pop up and a sprawling play up the middle on a ground out to end the contest. Yerby went seven strong, allowing eight hits and just one earned run with four strikeouts. Ryan Riley allowed just five hits and a walk while whiffing 10 in seven innings of work.

In game two, Clarkson rolled out to a 3-0 lead in the first three innings as Brad Pearson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly after Tito and Tommy Bianchi began the game with back-to-back hits. Two innings later, Clarkson scored a pair when Pearson doubled home one run and Mike Mieczkowski forced in a run on a ground out.

RPI responded in the fifth with a five-spot, taking advantage of a Clarkson miscue. With the bases loaded, a grounder turned into an error instead of an out, allowing one run to score and for the inning to continue. Jake Defayette then tied the game with a two-run double, and Austin Lawrence gave the Engineers the lead with a two-run single.

Clarkson tied the game two innings later as Pearson doubled in Bianchi to reduce the margin to one, and then came around himself on a Mieczkowski single.

In the bottom of the eighth, Mike Messier dropped down a bunt and reached safely on the hit and then advanced to second when the throw came up the line somewhat as Messier and the RPI first baseman collided. Tito then reached on an error and Bianchi singled to load the bases. Pearson recorded his second sacrifice fly of the game, as Messier scampered home with the go-ahead run.

Mark Connor, who came on in relief in the sixth, pitched a flawless ninth to close out the win for Clarkson.

Nate Burns and Connor combined to give up seven hits and no earned runs over nine frames. Burns went five innings and gave up six hits and no walks while striking out six, and Connor gave up just a single hit in four innings of work, striking out three. Pearson finished 2-for-2 in the game with four runs batted in and Tito was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Bianchi closed out the doubleheader going 6-for-8 overall.
